Main scientific interests (1975 - 2003)

My M.S. Degree Thesis work concerns two problems in mathematical physics. The first one [1] is the problem of the nonlinear mathematical transfer theory, and the second one [5] is the problem of the optimal control on the stochastic processes which are the solution of a stochastic differential equation for the continuous processes.

During 1975 - 1977 I took part in experimental works on ultra long radio-wave propagation (in NIRFI, [2]).

From 1977 to 1980 I worked on mathematical theory of the optimal control (under the supervision of V.I. Plotnikov and S.F. Morozov). My Ph.D. Thesis work 'Investigation by variational methods of the optimization problems for the stochastic integral equations for discontinuous processes' was devoted to the control systems of the form

dh = a( t,h,u) dt+b( t,h,u) dw+

where w is a Wiener process, [(n)\tilde] is a Poisson random measure. The main result of this work is the necessary and sufficient conditions of the process (1) optimality (for a given maximizing functional) in the form of stochastic maximum principle (see [3,4,6]). Using general functional approach (of V.I. Plotnikov) I obtained new results concerned this problem, in particular, local maximum principles in the problem of coefficients b,g control. Next achievement was a new functional form of the adapted process representation. Applying this form the various principle maximum received by other researchers ( J. Kushner, J. M. Bismut, V.I. Arkin ) can be united.

Later I studied some other problems of the stochastic optimal control: a new time-control problem [8], the problem of entrance of a stochastic process to the given region [9,10] etc.

In 1980 - 1990 I worked as an applied programmer in several physical projects at Gorky St. University (1980 - 1985, with V.P. Dokuchaev and A.E. Krupina [7]) and at the Institute of Applied Physics, Russian Academy of Sciences (1985 - 1990, with A.I. Saichev and A.L. Virovlyansky). I developed some program complexes (in Fortran and C) for solving of the ionospheric plasma equations and modeling of the sound wave propagation process in an inhomogeneous media (in the geometry optics approach).

Since 1990 I have performed a few works in the theory of high-frequency wave propagation in random inhomogeneous medium, wave scattering and Ocean tomography (with A.I. Khil'ko, [11,12,13,14,15]).

In 2000-2002 I took part (with A.L. Virovlyansky) in the work of Prof. G.M. Zaslavsky group (CIMS, NYU) for the ray chaos investigations [16,18]. I developed the program complex (in C++) for the action-angle presentation of the ray trajectories.

Pedagogical activity (1978 - 2003)

During my post-graduate student days (1978 - 1980) I worked as a reader and a teaching assistant in basic courses in Probability Theory (Nizhny Novgorod State University, Radiophysical Department).

Since 1980 I have been working as a lecturer in the Radiophysical Department of Nizhny Novgorod State University (sub-faculty of mathematics). I gave the following basic courses:

  1. The Probability Theory and Mathematical Statistics (1980 - 1988)

4.      The Mathematical Analysis (1988 - 1992)

5.      The Mathematical Physics (Since 1992)

I also gave the special course in Functional Analysis (1980 - 1988).

During this period I conducted practical training in various courses of mathematics, such as:

  1. probability theory,

2.      mathematical analysis,

3.      mathematical physics,

4.      differential equation,

5.      analytical geometry and algebra,

6.      vector and tensor analysis,

7.      numerical analysis and computer coding (Basic, Fortran, C, Pascal).

I have published 13 booklets (of various mathematical subjects) for students.

I supervised 5 diploma thesis works (Nizhny Novgorod State University, Radiophysical Department, Mechanical and Mathematical Department)
