Mariano Dayrit Santos

 

 MARIANO MARCIANO DAYRIT SANTOS was born on January 08, 1909 in San Fernando, Pampanga. On January 27, 1909, he was baptized by Fr. Juan Almario, OSA, cura parroco of San Fernando with Don Gregorio Dayrit, his maternal uncle, and Doņa Maria Santos, his paternal aunt standing as sponsors. 

In 1933, Mariano Santos received a Diploma in Illustration, Cartooning and Commercial Designing from the School of Fine Arts of the University of the Philippines.  The following year, he received a Diploma in Painting from the same institution.  An active member of the UP student community, he served as the representative of the School of Fine Arts to the UP Junior Council and the Board of Management of the Philippine Collegian in 1933 and the UP Senior Council in 1934.  He also served as a staff artist for the same university publication and the yearbook of the University of the Philippines, the Philippinensian in 1934.  He was also President of Aslag Ning Arte (Pampango Artists Association) of the School of Fine Arts from 1932-33.    

He was a cartoonist at the Philippine Herald in 1933 and worked as an illustrator at Ramos Roces Publications the next year.  From 1934 to 1938, he worked at the Tribune-Vanguardia-Taliba.

He married CATALINA SOMERA MAGAT (b. March 09, 1923 in Mexico, Pampanga) on January 09, 1949 in Manila, daughter of JUAN MAGAT and BUENAVENTURANZA SOMERA.   

He died on February 18, 1993 in Angeles City, Pampanga of a heart failure.
