CLIL = Content and Language Integrated Learning







Definition:

Focuses:
  • Improve overall target language competence
  • Develop oral communication skills
  • Develop plurilingual interests and attitudes
  • Build intercultural knowledge & understanding
  • Prepare for internationalisation, specifically EU integration
  • Provide opportunities to study content through different perspectives
  • Access subject-specific target language terminology
  • Diversify methods & forms of classroom practice
Situation in Europe:
  • 1995 The White Paper “Teaching and learning languages. Towards the learning society.”
  • 2005 Council of Europe (ECML) CLIL – Country Profiles published
  • a prior objective of education: a proficiency in three community languages
The basic CLIL document: Lesson content:
  • Provide opportunities to study content from a new viewpoint
  • Subject-specific target language terminology
  • Practise more a difficult topic
  • Leave out an insignificant topic
Language – Exposure:
  • Low - about 5-15% of teaching time
  • Medium - about 15-50% of teaching time
  • High - over 50% of teaching time
Motivation:
  • Difficulty of teacher's speech x communication skills of pupils
  • The content is conveyed in a foreign language using appropriate communication level
  • Use of individual learning strategies
  • Diversity of methods & forms of classroom practice
