| About My Screename | ||||||||||
| Indiana University's Bloomington campus used to be graced with the presence of a living legend. Coach Bob Knight redefined the way that IU Hoosier basketball was played. More importantly, he redefined the way that the people viewed the university as a whole. During his 30 year tenure, the library gained several donations through his library fund. This commitment to education continued towards his work with his players. When the team would travel somewhere special, Coach would take them to something that would actually be different. In Hawaii, they'd visit the Pearl Harbor memorial. In New York City, they might take in a broadway play. He did these things to make sure the team knew more than basketball. For the rest of us who just attended IU, we got letters from Coach in our orientation materials. These letters suggested that expose ourselves to other things the university offered besides the classroom and he wasn't asking us to attend sporting events. He was letting us know about the shows at the IU Auditorium and the productions put on by our own School of Music including operas. These are the reasons I chose my screename. When IU fired Coach Knight, they fired one of the truly great educators at our University. Very few, if any, professors cared as much about the general education and welfare of the students as Coach did. The few players who complain about him are players who weren't allowed to become "stars" on his team. That's only because he coached a team and didn't allow anyone to become a star. Some players naturally stood out while he was here like Steve Alford, Damon Bailey, and Calbert Cheaney. They accomplished this in an unselfish manner though. So, my screename is quite valid for me. Indiana University truly does need Coach Knight. |
