Chapter
fifty:
Zac
was sitting in the small waiting room, leaning forward with his elbows balanced
on his knees, tenting his fingers together.
He
sighed heavily.
The
police were in Becky’s hospital room, talking to her
and the doctors, but Zac remained in the waiting room afraid to upset her even
further.
He
couldn’t believe he would actually think she had done this to herself. He knew
her better than that.
He sighed heavily and sat back in the chair. The last thing he wanted was for
Becky to be mad at him, but he knew she was mad at him already. And she had
every right to be.
Now,
all he wanted was to take care of her, but now he was afraid she wouldn’t let
him.
Luke
crossed the room and sat next to him. “Hey man, how are you holding up?”
Zac
groaned. “Do you have to even ask? I’ve been so stupid. I accused my girlfriend
of such a horrible thing and now she’s going to leave soon and I’ll never get
to take care of her.”
“She
doesn’t leave until Friday. You’ve still got four days.”
Zac
sighed. “I hope.”
Jen
and Christy came out of the hospital room, followed by two police officers.
“We’re
going to need to take your statements as well, girls.”
“Sure.”
Christy said.
“Zac,
Becky wants to see you.” Jen said, clapping him on the shoulder before
following the police into another room.
Zac
stood and crossed the room. He paused outside Becky’s door, wiping his sweaty
palms on his jeans. Finally, he pushed open the door.
Becky
was sitting up in the bed, but looked as though she could barely keep her eyes
open.
Zac
made his way over to her, and carefully sat next to her. He tenderly tucked a
stray stand of hair behind her ear.
“Becca,
I’m sorry.”
“That’s
okay. It’s my fault. I should have told you the truth.”
“No,
Becca, I should have known you wouldn’t…. and I should have known you better.”
“Zaccy,
it’s okay. Let’s just forget about it, okay? Lets just
enjoy the time we have left.”
“Alright.” He smiled.
“Will
you lay next to me?”
He
smiled. “Sure.”
