Chapter
two hundred and fifty seven:
Christy
followed Isaac into their room. She was feeling incredibly relieved, but after
all she had been through, she just wanted to get some sleep. Without even
looking at the room, she went straight to the bed, and dropped onto her back
with a contented sigh. The bed was comfortable, that was all that mattered.
Isaac
smiled, and clicked on the lamp next to the bed. He picked up the set of
pajamas that the girls had left for her on the pillow and read the little note
they had left.
“Becky
and Jen got you a present.”
Christy
opened her eyes slowly. “I don’t have the energy to change.” She groaned. “I’ll
sleep in my clothes.”
“Honey,”
He sat down gently on the edge of the bed. “You have every reason to be tired,
and normally I would let you sleep, but I have to take you down to the girls room.”
“Why?”
She asked, her eyes drifting closed again.
“I
need to talk to the guys, and I can’t leave you alone.”
“I’ll
be fine.”
“You
know I can’t take that chance.” He gently laid a hand on her stomach.
Christy
didn’t reply, and she didn’t make any attempt to move either.
“Come
on, C. You can put your pajamas on, and go straight to bed after.”
She
sighed heavily and lifted her body from the mattress, curling into a sitting
position. “I’m wearing my pjs to the other room
then.” She announced and stalked off to the washroom to change and try to fix
her hair.
Isaac
checked his watch with a sigh. It was late and getting later by the minute.
Christy needed to rest, and he couldn’t suppress his own drowsy yawn. He sat
down on the bed himself, and looked around. If he had his own stuff, he could
have busied himself unpacking, but nearly everything he owned had been in the
fire. Insurance would cover their stuff and the girls, and travel insurance
would be an added bonus, therefore he wasn’t worried about that. Material goods
could be re-purchased.
It had been a very close call, and he knew it. The more he thought about it,
the more the knot of worry grew in the pit of his stomach.
He
wasn’t sure how long he had been sitting on the edge of the bed trying to mull
things over. But the next thing he knew, Christy was standing next to him, clad
in a pair of pajamas that were at least two sizes too big for her. She seemed
to be swimming in them.
He
smiled warmly, not wanting her to know how worried he truly was. “Ready?”
She
nodded and extended her hand to him. He took her hand and stood, leading the
way from the room. He touched the key card in his pocket to be sure he had it,
and led the way down the hall and around the corner. Luke and Zac were sitting
against the wall, Luke with his legs outstretched in front of him. Zac was
sitting with his legs crossed and
Christy
released Isaac’s hand as they approached. Luke stood, “How are you are you
feeling okay?” Luke asked.
“I’m
just tired.” She replied.
“Are
they sure the baby is going to be fine?” Zac asked.
Isaac
shot him a glare, and he promptly closed his mouth.
“They’re
reasonably sure. I just have to be careful.” Christy admitted. She had spoken
quietly, but it had been loud enough for Isaac to hear the despondency in her
voice.
“Honey,
why don’t you go inside and lay down?” Isaac offered with a reassuring smile.
“Yeah,
the girls are in there already.” Luke unlocked the door and held it open for
her. Once she was inside he closed the door behind her.
Christy
stood for a moment, adjusting to the dark room. Both Becky and Jen were sound
asleep. Not wanting to waste any time, Christy carefully turned off the
television and climbed into the king sized bed with her two best friends, and
promptly drifted off.
