Chapter two
hundred and thirty seven:
Christy woke
from her nap, just as the bus had pulled in to gas up. Luke was sitting in the
chair in the front lounge reading while Jen was sleeping peacefully on the
sofa.
“She
okay?” Christy asked.
“Yeah, she’s
just tired.” Luke replied in a hushed tone.
“Where is
everyone?” Christy asked.
“They went in to
the truck stop.”
Christy nodded
and grabbed her purse. “I’m going to run in too. See you in a bit.” She exited
the bus, smiled politely at the driver as she passed and jogged across the
parking lot to the front entrance. She wandered up and down the aisles and
collected two issues of Cosmo and a candy bar, before she found her husband going
through a rack of paperback novels.
She approached
and gently placed a hand on his shoulder. He turned, “C, you’re awake!” He said
in slight surprise.
She nodded.
“Listen, about earlier… I’m sorry. I was just upset… I hate it when people keep
secrets from me, and I know you were trying to do the right thing.”
“That’s okay, C.
I understand. And I should have told you.”
She folded
herself into his arms for a hug, and he embraced her tightly, adding. “I guess
I need to get used to mood swings, right?”
“I don’t think
that was pregnancy related. I think I was just being a bitch.” She admitted.
“I’m sorry.”
“Don’t worry.”
He smiled, finally releasing her. “What have you got there?”
“A
little light reading.”
She held up her magazines.
He smiled. “I
picked those up for you too,” he showed her the copies he had grabbed. “I
thought I’d get them and bring them to you on the bus.”
“That’s sweet…
Can you add this to it too?” She handed him her candy bar.
He laughed.
“Give me a bite and you’re on.”
“I don’t know
about that.” She teased. “We’ll have to see.”
“It’s okay. I’ll
get my own.” He laughed. “Is there anything else you need?”
“I don’t think
so… I should maybe get something for Jen. She might want something…” Christy
looked around. “Have you seen any of those marshmallow bananas?”
“Yeah,
over here.” He led
the way to another aisle. “They’re gross.”
“I know, I think
so too.” Christy smiled.

Zac found Becky
flipping through a book of various word and number puzzles.
He wrapped his
arms around her body and pulled her against his.
Becky giggled. “Zaccy…”
“What? This
might be the only chance I get to be alone with you. We’ll be on a bus full of
people until tomorrow.”
Becky laughed.
“Speaking of, we should be getting back. We’re supposed to leave in two
minutes.”
“It’s not like
they’ll leave without us…” He shrugged.
“You never know.
They might.”
He shrugged.
“They could try to play a show without a drummer…”
Becky smiled.
“Come on, let’s check out.”
“I’m not getting
anything.” He shrugged.
Becky promptly
put her book back, “Me either. Let’s go.”
They met up with
Isaac and Christy at the door.
“What’s wrong? I
thought you were over your morning sickness by now.” Becky asked Christy. “It’s
mid-afternoon.”
Christy nodded.
“I was getting some marshmallow bananas for Jen, and
the smell of the things…” She clutched her stomach. “I think I’m going to throw
up.”
Isaac shrugged
helplessly at Zac, who laughed. “Come on, let’s get
back to the bus.” He urged.
“Where’s
“He’s trying on
shirts on the other side of the store… I think he’s going to be a while.” Zac
replied with a smirk.
“Alright, I’ll
get him.” Isaac handed his grocery bag to Zac. “Take the girls back to the
bus?”
Once outside the
store, Christy draped an arm around Becky as they walked two steps ahead of
Zac. “You know I’m getting sick of this over-protective thing already.” She
said softly so Zac couldn’t hear.
“Wait until the
body guard comes on tour.” Becky replied.
“Oh
Jesus.” Christy
groaned.
