Chapter two hundred and twenty-eight:

Becky had gotten a ride to the hospital with Taylor that morning, and was actually surprised when Luke wasn’t there. She found a fresh bouquet of flowers on the night stand from him, with a note on the table which was addressed to her instead of Jen. It simply stated that he had class and would be a couple hours later than usual getting to the hospital. He also left his number if anything changed.

Becky dropped her purse onto the chair just as Taylor returned from the cafeteria. “I brought you a coffee… what are you doing?” He asked, setting the tray of coffees down on the dresser.

Becky had removed a handful of brightly colored nail polish bottles from her purse.

“I think I’m going to paint Jen’s toenails. Want to help?” She offered.

Taylor laughed. “No, I think I’ll pass.” He sat down and opened a magazine he had swiped from the waiting room.

“What color do you think she would like?”

“I’m… I’m really not that comfortable with that big of a decision.” Taylor admitted, solely to get out of the conversation.

Christy appeared in the doorway, “Tay, Isaac is in the waiting room and wants to see you.”

Once Taylor left the room, Christy crossed to Jenna’s bed and gently pushed her dark hair from her eyes. “God, she looks like hell.”

“The doctors said she was doing better. When she wakes up she can come home.”

“So soon?”
Becky nodded. “They’re going to put her on pills to keep her food down and we’re supposed to keep a close eye on her.”

“Yeah, we’ll do that.”
They were both silent for several minutes.
”How’s everything? How was the check up?”

Christy smiled. “Well, I made Isaac incredibly uncomfortable by talking about pregnancy sex, but everything is normal, except the morning sickness which is a huge drag. What are you doing?” She asked, nodding toward the row of nail polish.

“I’m going to paint her toenails.” Becky folded up the bottom blankets to expose Jen’s feet. “Want to help?”

“Sure… What color?”

“I don’t know.” Becky laughed. “I haven’t decided yet. You know she’ll hate anything we pick out for her.”

“True… why don’t you just try this pretty purple color?” Christy suggested.

“Yeah, that’s my favorite too.”

Becky unscrewed the cap and began painting Jen’s toes carefully.

“What’s new with you?” Christy carefully sat on the edge of Jen’s bed.

Becky smiled. “Zac and I… you know.”

“Good! It’s about time.” Christy examined a bottle of nail polish. “And?”

“And… well, since all of this happened, I’ve been really worried and he’s been so supportive. He took me out to dinner last night… and I really want to… make it up to him, you know?”

“Yeah.”

“Can you give me some advice?”

“Of course. What kind of advice are you looking for?”

Becky blushed slightly. “Well, the last time it kind of…”

“Hurt?” Christy supplied. “That’s normal. It was your first time.”

“Is there a way to get around that?”

“Yeah, you could try being on top.”

“Does that help?”

“I heard it does… you could even try oral-“

“I don’t know if I’m comfortable with… you know.”

“That’s fine. I’m not a fan of being on the receiving end either, but he will definitely enjoy when you give it to him.”

“Okay, I’ll try that. Thanks.”

“Guys…” Came a dry voice from behind them. “That color sucks.”

Christy and Becky exchanged looks, and darted their gaze quickly to Jen.

“You’re awake!” Christy cried, quickly hugging Jen.

“I’ll get a doctor!” Becky ran from the room.

“Are you okay? Are you in any pain?”

“My side… is killing me,” She groaned. “And my mouth is so dry.”

“Okay, just a second until the doctor gets here, okay?”

Becky appeared with a doctor a step behind.

“Where’s Luke?” Jen asked, closing her eyes against the bright lights. The doctor lifted each eye-lid and shone a flashlight into each eye.

“He has classes all morning. He said he would stop by later…” Becky replied.

“We’re going to run some tests.” The doctor announced, “And we’ll see if we can have you home by tomorrow.”
