Week one:
In the first week of the course we will play some ice-breaker games, read the play, go through the basics of theatre performance, divide the class into groups and decide which scene each group would like to work on for scene study. (Note: more than one scene may be chosen depending on length of the scene.) During scene study you will perform a particular scene from Romeo & Juliet/Hamlet but with an original twist or take on it, this might even mean changing the text to suit your purposes. We will also look at text analysis, which is the themes, characters, motivations, iambic pentameter and the beats of the text, and the importance of these in performing Shakespeare.

During the first week from Wednesday 11th to Friday 13th there will also be a Shakespeare theatre trip to London and Stratford-Upon-Avon. On Wednesday the 11th we will visit The Theatre Museum in Covent Garden for a workshop with the Reduced Shakespeare Company. That evening we will go for dinner in the
Rainforest Caf , then attend a performance of the Reduced Shakespeare Company, which is a hilarious comedy concentrating the complete works of Shakespeare into 90minutes. On Thursday 12th we will take the train out to Stratford-Upon-Avon and visit Shakespeares birthplace and the home of the Royal Shakespeare Company Here we will visit some of the famous Shakespearean houses including his birthplace, do a workshop with the RSC and go to see Hamlet by the RSC. On Friday we will spend the morning shopping in Oxford Street and then visit Shakespeares original stage the Globe Theatre and see a matinee performance of Romeo & Juliet and have  a tour of the Globe. This will be followed by shopping in the famous high streets of London, and then dinner in China town. Then finally back to Dublin.
Week two:
Week 2 of the course will be working on the scenes chosen in scene study for performance at the end of the week, these will be performed- like Shakespeares plays- in the round.  We will also devise a short play based on the major themes and character outlines from the Shakespeare play you are studying. Both your scene study and your short plays will be performed for family and friends on the final day of the course: Friday the 20th. This will be performed in full costume, make-up and set pieces.

By the end of the course you will have a thorough understanding of the Shakespeare play you will be answering questions on in the Junior/Leaving Cert. You will have an in-depth knowledge of themes, characters, plot and Shakespearean language.

Apart from the academic benefits of doing this course, you will also be pushed to use your creativity, brought through the steps of performing Shakespeare as an actor in the round, given training on confidence development, and above all else you will have a lot fun and make new friends.

This course is designed for people at all levels and from all backgrounds, there are a limited number of places.
