What Christmas Was
8 December 2002
Silver bells already ringin'
Carolers already singin'
But Christmas seems so far away
It hardly seems like a holiday
Season's greetings just ain't the same
Not feelin' much heat from the Yule log's flame
Everything just feels so wrong
Yeah, it's Christmas, and you're gone
Well, what Christmas was
Was wonderland
Clear freezing nights
And the warmth of your hand
Cramming a tree into
The trunk of your car and
Fireside kisses like to
Stop my heart but
What Christmas was
Ain't what it will be
No, there ain't nothin' joyful
'Bout the way you left me
I see around me children laughin'
Tired mall Santas, people passin'
Don't many sugarplums dance in my head
With this empty place next to me in bed
Well, my friends all try to come around
Drag me to all the bars downtown
But the rum's kinda flat without the nog
Ain't liftin' my spirit from this holiday fog
'Cause what Christmas was
Was silent nights
Town square singalongs
And twinkling lights
The rain letting up
For an hour or so
In the midnight clear
The houses all aglow
What Christmas was
Is just memory
God rest you, my love
And God rest me
When you were at my side
Angels sang on high
You were the light in my eyes
The star I steered by
I'd cross mountains and deserts to
Sit at your feet
Oh, won't you come on
Back to me
Christmas was
A fairy tale
A joyful song
Despite the gale
Bells ringing out
In the clear blue
The only gift I
Ever needed was you
Oh, I'm lost and alone
In a freezing midnight
But, may all your
Christmases be bright.
