Destiny's Child
March 23rd, 2001

It was my bestest buddy Megan's birthday, so she, Jill (remember her from the soulDecision concert review?) and I piled into the ol' Cavalier and drove our giddy selves to Lincoln to see us some Destiny's Child.

After getting to the venue, complaining 'cause our seats SUCKED, getting booted out of what we'd thought were our seats, and then ending up stuck in the last row, we were ready to see some good R&B-pop. Unfortunately, there were opening acts. Opening acts who were little kids. The first was PYT, a girl group. The best things about their show were their sparkly outfits. Thank God I took notes, 'cause I honestly don't remember a single thing about their performance other than they played a little bit of Crazytown's "Butterfly" while introducing themselves. Their choreography was cooler than they deserved.

The second opening act was a little better. Her name was Stacy Somethingorother. I'd written down "Stacy Lethal" in my notes, but Jill saw them and told that the girl's last name was "Rico." I think Lethal would have been a much better last name. It gives her some edge probably more edge than her performance deserved. She was a good singer, but her songs were all bland and forgettable. It's funny that her songs were all forgettable, and yet I remember her shirt very well. It was this tanktop thing that looked like a godawful quilt.

So after the romper room opening acts, it was time for Destiny's Child. Beyoncé and Friends came out in purple bedazzled leather. I'll give you the song-by-song breakdown from here on out.

So Good: I'd heard this song before, 'cause I downloaded it. It's about how everyone likes Destiny's Child now that they're all big and rich and famous and stuff. The performance, which included some headbanging/riffing à la Beyoncé was good on the talent side, but I wanted to run up to the soundboard and punch the guy who was running it. The keyboards were WAY too loud, and a couple of times I heard feedback.

No No No: The Wyclef remix, which is honestly the only way to listen to that song.

Say My Name: I didn't write any notes about it, so I'm just assuming it was good. 'Cause lord knows I'd have made sure to take note if it'd sucked. :)

Survivor: The dance to this song is really cool. One part that was especially awesome was during the part right before Michelle's solo when there's all that "ohohohoh" in the background. The audience basically sang backup for her. She sang her part lifted up on the dancers' shoulders. Afterwards, they asked us to make them "#1 on TRL," which made me laugh. Yeah right, girls. Not so long as there's an O-Town.

Good Time: This was the first song after a costume change that'd featured the dancers going crazy to "Party Up" and "Big Pimpin'." They came out wearing these gorgeous tan flowy dresses.

Now That She's Gone: Kelly riffed her awesome heart out during this one.

Killing Time: I have no idea whether or not that's the name of the song. I don't have either of their first two CDs. I should have gone into this educated. Bad Rachael. Oh, and Beyoncé riffs a lot.

Between songs here, they basically sucked up to each other. Kelly talked about how awesome Michelle is, Beyoncé talked about how awesome Kelly is, and then Kelly and Michelle both talked about how awesome Beyoncé is. It was very unnecessary, if you ask me. I've never been to a concert where the performers did that before. At no point during the Backstreet Boys' show did Kevin stop and say, "You know, AJ, I just want you to know that I think you're an amazing, talented man. You are a blessing to the Backstreet Boys." No. It's just not right. Destiny's Child went on for a good five minutes about how much they like each other. Okay, we get it.

After that, Kelly joined hands with Michelle and Beyoncé and asked us to pray for the kids in the San Diego school shooting. I'm not being sarcastic when I say that that is a genuinely sweet thought.

A cappella gospel song: Very pretty, and Kelly dedicated it to the kids in San Diego.

Bug A Boo: After a costume break, they came back out to do this song in white bedazzled leather. Very cool.

The band played the intro to "Jumpin' Jumpin'," and Destiny's Child stood on stage, backs towards us poised to start the song, got us all hyped up for it, then they turned around and yelled "PSYCH!" Hahahaha. Good one. :)

Bills, Bills, Bills: I wish I'd taken more notes on this one, 'cause all I wrote down was this: "Grooved out. Michelle = solo. Lights flash w/chorus." I have no idea what that meant.

Time for a band break. Interesting fact: Destiny's Child's guitarist and musical director is also 'N Sync's guitarist. Jill (the not-a-boyband-fan) was actually the one who pointed this out to me. She remembered him ("Actually I just remembered his arms." -Jill) from when I'd forced her to watch 'N Sync Live at Madison Square Garden. During this break, they also introduced the dancers, one of whom is Beyoncé's little sister Solange.

Jumpin' Jumpin': I love this song. I really do. It's so much fun.

Independent Women (Part One): The encore. Kinda. I'm not really sure if this and "Jumpin' Jumpin'" were encores or not, since they never said "Goodnight, Lincoln!" or anything corny like that. Hmm. Anyway, I'm sure you've heard this song before. It was only played on the radio eight million times. I wish I were being hyperbolic there, but it's the truth.

All in all, it was a good show. They're fun to watch. The only thing that would have made the performance better would have been to cut out the whole "we love each other" spiel. Oh! I forgot to mention this earlier, but they kept making those stupid "we heard that (insert city here) was off the hook, so don't let us down" stuff. We were obviously all feelin' their show, so I don't know why they kept trying to encourage crowd participating when we were already participating.

That was kind of a bad note to end the review on, but yeah. Good singing, good show. :)
