These are made up by coating or impregnating course sawdust, or cork waster, or other suitable material with various metallic salts. Pine cones may be coated with the salts too and then can be burned or thrown into a fire.
Sodium Salts = Yellow flames. Use sodium chloride (table salt). Copper Salts = Green flames. Use copper sulfate (blue vitriol). Baron Salts = Yellowish-Green flames. Use ordinary borax. Strontium Salts = Red flames. Potassium Salts = Violet flames. Use three parts potassium sulfate and one part potassium nitrate (Saltpeter). Calcium Salts = Blue flames. Magnesium Salts = White flames.Use magnesium sulfate (or ordinary epson salts). |

HOW TO MAKE A BESOM (WITCHES BROOM) |
|
|
|
1) First, gathered what is needed, being the staff and some plants that were dried in the forest.
2) Look for spindly twigs to give stability to the smaller brush that made up bottom of the besom which is normally straw.
3) Painted the triple Goddess on the staff and a few other symbols which has mean for you.
4) You can use bailer twine to attach the staff to the broom part Using the bailer twine, first attached the small twigs around the staff, from about 5 inches from the bottom. You can use any strong twine or even floral wire.
5) Then just wind it around the staff and attached the other brush gathered. Find an assortment of about 4 kinds of brush, including wheat staffs and timothy that had naturally dried when they died.
6) Then take a ribbon and wrapped it very tightly around the bottom 6 inches of the staff where it is all wrapped together. It's sturdy enough to place upright because of the twigs it holds and is beautiful. |

RUNES (not wooden) |

4 cups flour 1 cup salt 1 teaspoon alum (in spice section of grocery store) 1 1/2 cups water food coloring (optional)
Mix all ingredients in a large mixing bowl. If it is too dry, add a tablespoon of water. Work into dough with your hands. If you want to color the dough, divide into parts, and add food coloring to each section and knead.
Roll out dough with a rolling pin on a slightly floured surface. Cut dough into squares or rectangles. Use a toothpick to carve the rune into the tile. Place the rune tiles gently onto an ungreased cookie sheet. Bake for 30 minutes in 250 degree oven. Turn and bake another 1 � hours until hard and dry.
Let cool completely. Sand lightly with fine sandpaper. Spray with clear shellac or acrylic spray. |
