On a Monday on the first of May - which is Bealtaine (bal-tinne) - the Tuatha D Danann (too-ha day dan-an) first arrived in Ireland and they landed in Connaught. Legend says that they landed on a mountain in ships of the sky that blotted out the sun for three days. Thus, from the mists they appeared. Tuatha D Danann are described as coming in dark clouds"sailing the high air and the low air" landing on the mountains of Conmaicne Rein in Connemara and casting darkness for three days over the face of the sun.
They are described as physically outstanding; tall, red-haired, fair-skinned, powerful aristocratic and mystical beings who mingled with mortals and yet remained aloof and superior to them. But the Tuatha were not welcomed by the current residents of Ireland, the Fir Bolg (fir bolg). After a time of negotiation, the two sides joined battle. These newcomers we the People of the Goddess Danu (dan-nuh) and their men of learning possessed great powers and were revered as if they we gods.
They were accomplished in the various arts of druidry, namely magick, prophecy and occult lore. They learnt their druidic skills in Falias (fa-lee-as), Gorias (gor-ee-as), Findias (fin-dee-as) and Murias (moor-ee-as), the four cities of the northern island. The invaders brought with them the four great treasures of their tribe from each of the four cities where they had learnt their druidic skills. |
