Helmet of Salvation: In the assurance that we are saved, there is something that "holds our heads together". In the confidence of God's grace in saving me, I can keep my head straight. This is a repeated process of remembering salvation. "This do in rememberance of Me."
Breastplate of righteousness: By living righteously, we will protect our hearts. This isn't a "one time" deal. This is a process. We need to put it on.
Sword of the Spirit: This is our offensive weapon. Most of us carry around little, short, flimsy swords, while the enemy carries a broadsword. Swordsmanship is a learned skill that requires a great amount of time, commitment, and training. We cannot fail to learn that skill.
Belt of Truth: With Truth as a basis, we have the ability to run in the paths of righteousness (Psa. 119:32). Learning truth is an ongoing process.
Shoes of the preparation of the Gospel: This is preparation, we need to know the gospel. We need to prepare to share with others the Truth. Then we don't "trip up" when we share the gospel or run on the path of righteousness.
Shield of Faith: It is faith in God that defends us during times of attack. When Satan says, "Did God say...?", it is faith that replies, "God is faithful." When Satan says, "God is holding out on you.", it's faith that replies, "God causes all things to work together for the good." This faith is something that grows. It grows by exercising it and seeing, time and again, that God is faithful. "Jesus, Jesus, how I trust Him; how I've proved him o'er and o'er."
13Wherefore take unto you the whole armor of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand. 14Stand therefore, having your loins girt about with truth, and having the breastplate of righteousness; 15And your feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace; 16Above all, taking the shield of faith, wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked. 17And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. Ephesians 6:13-17
