Did you know that blueberries have been around for thousands of years and were once called "star berries" because of the star-shaped calyx on the top of each berry? Lewis and Clark found that Indians in the Northwest Territory smoked wild blueberries to preserve them for the winter. One of the first meals the two shared with the Indians was venison that had wild blueberries pounded into the meat and then was smoked and dried. | Here's a tip for you if you like to go out and pick your own blueberries. Take an empty coffee can, drill 2 holes in the sides of the can and attach a long piece of rawhide to it so you can hang the can around your neck while picking. This makes it easy to pick berries with both hands and you won't have to bend or stoop to fill your bucket! When the can is full, just empty it into your large bucket. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
