Ice Box Episode 7.03 “Isn’t It Weird, Isn’t It Strange” 03/08/2009
Bradley Fulton is in his motel room after Derek Bedford leaves. “If only he would understand where I’m coming from. He’s being stupid,” he comments to himself. “I better get him before he gets himself into any trouble.”
He puts on his coat and walks outside to find Derek sitting in his car. Bradley taps on the window. Derek unlocks the doors and Bradley climbs in. “You know I love you, at least I hope you do. You don’t have to act like this. I have to stay here until my internship is over. Then we can talk about getting away,” Bradley talks to Derek.

“That is all fine and dandy, but I never get to see you. You’re always busy or with him. I guess I’m just jealous. It’s a tough time for me right now. I want to be with the person I love,” Derek explains. “Can you do me a favor?”
“What?” Bradley asks solemnly.
“Can you try and be around more? I don’t have friends here and don’t enjoy spending all day in the motel while you’re running around being busy.” Derek looks at Bradley hoping he’ll suggest something the two of them can do to cure his boredom.
“Like I said, when everything is done and over with, we can get away. Right now I am busy with Edward. The rest of my career depends on doing a great job with him. You’re the only one I love,” Bradley looks back at Derek to see him disappointed. “It’s a tough time right now, but we’ll make it through.”

Derek is let down, “How about we compromise? I won’t complain about this crumby town, and you try to make it interesting for me. Help me see Kane the way you see it.”
“I will try my best. Hey, why don’t we get some dinner and enjoy some time together,” Bradley tries to cheer him up.
“Let’s do it!” Derek smiles and is relieved that Bradley is making an effort, “What is this Texas Hot I keep hearing about?”
“It is only the best restaurant, ever. I’ll tell you where to go,” Bradley tells Derek and the two get a bite to eat.
Myles Montgomery and Irwin Armstrong come out of the bedroom. They see Myles’ mom, Margaret Montgomery, busy in the kitchen.
“Hey, mom, how was work?” Myles asks his mother.
“Work was fine, but now I come home and have to get dinner ready. What are you two boys in the mood for?” she asks exhaustedly.

“I’m not in the mood for anything in particular,” Myles tells his mother. “Are you in the mood for anything specific?”
“I just had a busy day at the office, and now I’m just about ready for bed,” Margaret says.
Irwin pipes in, “I can make dinner for you, if you want. You can go unwind in the living room, Mrs. Montgomery.”
Margaret is surprised that her son’s friend has offered to make dinner; she didn’t expect her son to offer his help. “I was thinking about having goulash and garlic bread tonight. The meat is in one of the grocery bags on the counter and Myles can explain where everything is. I’m going to change my clothes. I’ll be back in a little bit.”
“You don’t need to come back in here; I’ll take care of everything. I’ll give a little holler when dinner’s ready,” Irwin says with a smile.
Mrs. Montgomery leaves the kitchen. Myles stares at Irwin, “Do you know how to make goulash?”
“I’m not brain dead. I’ll need elbow macaroni, spaghetti sauce, and the meat,” he says as he grabs a pot and fills it with water from the sink. Myles stands there watching Irwin.
“Can you get those things for me, please?” Irwin stresses in case Myles didn’t get the hint.
Instead of getting the items Myles tells him where everything is. Irwin becomes frustrated, “Listen, I told your mother I would make dinner. Not out of the kindness of my heart, but rather so we can discuss our plans from earlier. Now get the things I need!”
Myles pushes his lips together showing a disgusted face. He thinks to himself, “My mother never asks me to help in the kitchen so why should I have to help you?” After Irwin looks at him, he sighs and moves around the kitchen to get the items.

“You’re going to have to go over to your cousin’s and get his e-mail address. Tell them you missed Edward and want to be friends again, or something. Tell them anything, but don’t leave until you get that e-mail address,” Irwin instructs Myles.
At the Kane Manor, Edward Crawford, sits in his bedroom alone. On top of the bed with his laptop, he brings up his AIM buddy list. He notices Elizabeth is on, “I should probably talk to her. She’s my best friend and I haven’t talked to her in a month. She’s pry upset at me.” He doesn’t click on her name to start a conversation however.
He opens an Internet Explorer window. In the search bar located in the top right of the window, he types, “Kane, PA”. The default search engine posts websites related to his search. He sees one that fascinates him. He clicks on it and it brings up another window.
Another smaller window pops up. He clicks the blinking AIM bar at the bottom of his screen. It is Elizabeth. “Oh, good, she’s talking to me,” he thinks to himself, relieved.

This is their conversation over AIM:
Edward1984: Hey Elizabeth! How are you doing? I haven’t heard from you in a while… thought you might have been shot or something.
Po1ic3: I’m doing okay. Long time no chat… No gun shots to report, as of yet.
Edward1984: That’s good to hear. Hopefully it’ll stay that way.
Po1ic3: You’re telling me…
Edward1984: How’s the new job going?
Po1ic3: Well… I’m about ready to shoot my co-workers. They’re driving me crazy.
Edward1984: Why?
Po1ic3: Ugh, they are playing jokes on me. It’s irritating. Just something I’ll have to deal with later on, I suppose.
Edward1984: Well that’s not nice.
Po1ic3: Tell me about it. What’s going on with you?
Edward1984: Nothing…
Po1ic3: Oh come on, something has to be going on in your life…
Edward1984: Nope. I’ve been at home. I do have a phone conference with New York tomorrow, but I don’t care.
Po1ic3: You should care.
Po1ic3: Hey! Let’s go for a walk. I’ll be over at your house in 10 mins.
Edward1984: Nah, I’m not in the mood… maybe some other time.
Po1ic3: Um, ok. Are you feeling ok?
Edward1984: Yea, I’m fine.
Po1ic3: Ok, well then, I have to get going… early day of work tomorrow.
Edward1984: Take care, talk to ya later.
Po1ic3: Goodnight.

Their conversation ends and Edward is excited to check out the website he found. It is about the Kane Historical Society. He soon becomes absorbed by the town’s past when Kane was in its heyday.
Irwin is just adding the spaghetti sauce to the meat and noodles while the garlic bread is in the oven. Myles watches Irwin working on dinner, “I suppose after dinner I’ll go see Jamie. You don’t mind staying here and keeping my mother company do you?”
Irwin shakes his head from side to side, “Not at all. It will be a good bonding time for us. I’ll have to be as sweet as pie. Hopefully she won’t think we’re up to something though.”
Myles cautions him, “Don’t be too sweet or she will think we’re up to something.”
The oven beeps as the timer for the garlic bread hits zero. “You want to get your mother and tell her dinner is ready?” Irwin asks Myles. Irwin thinks about dinner being ready, but the table isn’t set. “On second thought, why don’t you set the table and I’ll get her.”
Myles hates chores and work in general, “I can get her it’s no trouble. You can set the table.”
“Go set the table,” Irwin orders Myles.
After a second or two of hesitation Irwin adds, “Now.”
Myles moves towards the cupboards and removes plates and glasses. Irwin wipes his hands off with a towel and walks into the living room to see Margaret.
“Dinner’s ready,” he speaks into the room. There is no answer and he notices Myles’ mother doesn’t move. He walks over to her and notices she is sleeping. “Poor thing is worn out.”
He taps her on her arm, “Mrs. Montgomery, dinner’s ready,” he says softly to wake her.
She awakes and apologizes for nodding off. The two walk into the dining room and join Myles.
After enjoying a wonderful meal, Margaret looks at her boys, “Thank you both for an extremely delicious meal. I’m so tired; I think I’m going to go to bed. Would it be too much trouble if you two took care of cleaning up?”
Myles begins to speak; “Mom, Irwin and I have been so busy today,” Irwin interrupts him.
“But you deserve to relax. It’ll be no problem.” Irwin smiles and then glares at Myles.
“You two are sweethearts. Thank you,” she says and she leaves to get ready for bed.
Myles and Irwin clear the table. In the kitchen Myles turns to Irwin, “Well smarty-pants, I’m going to get that e-mail address. Have fun cleaning up.”

As Myles leaves Irwin cleans up the kitchen, “It’s a miracle that boy made it through one year of college without servants of any kind. His poor mother, he better realize how lucky he is.” Irwin continues to grumble under his breath about Myles.
Margaret comes into the kitchen and catches Irwin off guard, “Where did Myles go?”
“I was in the mood for dessert so he went to get something from the store,” Irwin lies to Myles’ mother who walks over to Irwin and gives him a one armed hug.
“You have no idea how lucky I am to have you here. The house has been so empty since Myles left for college. Now that he’s back and brought you along, I’m happier than I have been in years,” she says.
Irwin begins to feel guilty for lying to her and not helping much around the house except for tonight. “You’re a great woman, Mrs. Montgomery. And even better mother,” he tells her.
Tomorrow’s Kane Republican (the town’s only newspaper) contains the headline, “Big Foot?” Strange news will be revealed in the afternoon paper; however, students at the high school will be informed from someone’s personal experience.
