Fahrenheit 9/11
I just watched Fahrenheit 9/11 the other day and I have to say its an eye opener. The documentary is obviously bias but dont let that deter you, it presents some undeniable facts. Though the documentary is focused around the war with Iraq after watching this movie I could not stop from thinking about the situation in the Philippines. This country has been plagued with corrupt officials since the 1970s who have sought to only make themselves richer while in power. During this last election the biggest threat to the current presidents reelection was a high school drop out whos biggest credential was being the countrys number one movie action star. No knock on Arnold. The actors name is Fernando Poe Jr. and he almost won. Thank God he didnt! He was being back by some of the most corrupt politicians in the history of that country, yet he still came so close to winning. I was asking myself how could this be? But after being in the country for a while you will come to realize why. The majority of the people there are under educated. Most of the people cant read or write. The people can hardly afford to feed their children yet alone afford a better education for them. They have become desperate and they are reaching at straws for a hope of something better.

I began to think if I was in charge of this country that is exactly the way I would keep it. Make the people think I am doing my best while continuing to ignore things such as their education and their personal well being. This would do two things for me. 1) It keeps the majority of the people ignorant. This way they will be easier to push around and there will be less of a chance of someone rising high enough socially to oppose me. Because face it if you dont have a proper education it is harder for you to make money and with out money you have very little power. 2) By ignoring their well being such as safety and health yet again it makes it easier for me to push them around. When someone is worrying about their neighbor breaking into their house at night or wondering how they are going to take care of their childs illness all other concerns seem to fade away. A few elegant speeches of how I am planning to remedy the situation should keep you satisfied enough as you struggle with the problem thats right in front of your face.

Now you are saying things will never happen like that in the US and thats where I say you are wrong. The Philippines was a prosperous country at one time and it took just one man to bring it all down. Someone all the people put their trust and faith in, the President. In 1972 before the start of the next election President Ferdinand Marcos ensured his stay in power by claiming martial law after the country had succumbed to a series of attacks. Some say Marcos let these attacks occur and some say that they were even caused by his own people. Is this sounding familiar? Communist attacks. Terrorist attacks. Whoever was actually at the center of these attacks it did not matter because it gave him the perfect excuse to execute his agenda.

I for one never thought this war, Operation Freedom was being fought for any humanitarian reasons such as freedom from oppression. The name was issued purely for propaganda. If you did however officials in the Philippines need more people like you to push around. We have people in our own country that need saving. People are starving and living in the streets. Why arent billions of dollars being used for that? In an interview on MSN a solider told a reporter how they were going there to improve the standard of living for these people. Do you think if maybe the US decided to lifted some the sanctions that we placed on them the people might not be that bad off? Then again there are people from the Philippines that go to Iraq for a better living, this is a fact. Why isnt the US doing anything about the Philippines? Because they have nothing to offer the US at the moment nor are they any threat. I for one however fell into the belief that we were going there to stop a future threat. A country that hates the US on the verge of building weapons of mass destruction. The way I see it there is nothing wrong with squashing a problem before it starts. In fact I believe it is the duty of the President to safe guard us from attacks now and in the possible future. Another thing I knew they had in Iraq is oil, a valuable commodity needed in order to keep this country running and its way of life going. It was going to be two birds with one stone. But after watching this film I have been persuaded to think this war was a little more personal for the President and not so much for the well being of this country or its future. The facts presented by Michael More in this film cant help me but think that this war was only motivated by the personal gain for his family and that of his close friends.

We can not let the actions of our nation be done solely for the benefit a few greedy officials. That is what is being done in the Philippines right now and look where they are. The wealthy run the government enforcing laws that favor their cause while ignoring others. How far are we from becoming a third world nation? If you ask me we are not that far away. Already through the Patriot Act, appropriately named to fool us yet again, we have lost some of our constitutional rights. The government now has the right to listen in to whatever we say on the phone or else where and track whatever we do. How long do you think it will be before we become just like China? Where if you speak out against the government there will be an official there the next day at your door step making sure you have nothing further to say. All across the country the government has been making cuts in our education and benefits such as health care and social security. Kids in elementary school now have to pay for their own Xerox copies of class assignments. The cost of college has increased more than double in some places over the last ten years. If this trend continues I guarantee there will become a bigger separation between the wealthy and everyone else. Soon only the wealthy will be able to afford schools with the better education. Keeping the majority of us uneducated and making it easier for corrupt officials to do as they please and push us around. I am sure most of you are saying this will never happen, especially those living in their nice furnished condos with fancy cars. I am not saying it is going to happen over night but give it a while, say another five, ten years or so and things will be much more apparent than they are now.

I advise everyone to go and see Fahrenheit 9/11 for them self and to vote this coming election. If there are any bills benefiting education please vote for them. Education is important for the survival of any country. Personally I wont be voting for Bush not just because of this film. If you go into any major book store and pick up a book on Bushisms you will come to a better understanding as to why I'm saying "no on Bush".

Faith
Have you ever argued with your self as if you were two completely different people? One side of you taking the far right and the other taking the far left? This happens to me all the time. In fact this has happened very recently. Me No. 1 was saying I can't simply pass on what could very well be the opportunity of my life while me No. 2, stubborn as ever would not let me fall in to believing such grand hopes. Even though both of me's knew that this opportunity is something that most people could only hope for and it was an offer given to me by the people who probably care about me most in this world, me No. 2's lack of faith was far too great for all of me to over come. This was not the lack of faith you found after you discovered the Easter Bunny wasn't real. This was something much darker. This lost of faith could have you doubting that the sun would rise the next morning. Have you believe that all hopes are mere fantasies. Tear you in two all over again and have you argue over if Santa is real. I wonder how does one get to this point? I don't think my life was hard. Maybe it's because I'm just too much of a realist? Maybe what I should be asking is how do I get my faith back.
