Above is a graphic showing the sign that was placed over Jesus' head on the cross. It was written in Hebrew, Latin and Greek. The rectangle outlined above, shows the piece that is displayed below.
A piece of The Holy Cross of Jesus Christ | Once again, it is thanks to Constantine
that this church was built. This is believed to be the original
site of the house of his mother St. Helena. St. Helena is credited
with being the one who found and retrieved the tools of Christ's Passion
from the Holy Land to Rome. It is believed that she housed the
true cross and other relics in her private chapel, which eventually was
converted to a basilica by her son in 330. Little remains of the
original church, but the ramps flanking the sanctuary allow visitors to
see the level of the original constantinian basilica. The chapel
of relics, entered to the left of the sanctuary, houses relics of the
true cross of Christ, a nail from the cross an a part of the cross of
the faithful thief.
There is no flash photography allowed in this church because the bright lights would deteriorate the relics faster. The relics are also not kept in brightly lit rooms either so the images are hard to make out. I have tried to enhance them by adjusting the lighting, but they do not come out better or clearer. |
