The Kiss Which
Changed Their Lives
The
story starts from 2 years ago when it was on the first day of
senior high school. Aihara Kotoko, with her two friends, Junko and Satomi
were running along the corridor as they are late for the term
opening ceremony. Just then, in Kotoko's haste, she bumps into
Irie Naoki and their lips meet. Kotoko looks up and is
embarrassed by what happened. She is attracted to the handsome
Naoki and apologizes to him about her rashness. However, Naoki
puts on a disgusted look and tells Kotoko that her kiss stinks.
He then walks away but Kotoko is still absorbed in her dreamy
state. Just then, Kotoko realises that her lips are bleeding from
the impact of her collision with Naoki but she still feels good
about her encounter with Naoki.
At the opening ceremony, Naoki represents the whole cohort of
Year 1s to make a speech while Kotoko looks on with admiration.
Meanwhile, the scene shifts to Kotoko flipping the pages of her
photo album which is full of Naoki's photos. It seems that Kotoko
has been in love with Naoki ever since her embarrassing encounter
with him at that time. She then relates how great Naoki is. In the history of
their high school Saint Tonan Gakuen, Naoki is the first student
whose IQ is 200. His results are always at the top of the cohort.
In terms of sports, Naoki also excels and he is a key player in
the basketball team. This is why Naoki earns the admiration of
the girls in the school.
On her 18th birthday, Kotoko decides to give Naoki a letter so as
to express her feelings for him. However, Naoki rejects the
letter and insults Kotoko by saying that he doesn't like girls
who are stupid. In the meantime, Matsumoto Reiko who likes Naoki
and is his classmate, looks on happily at Kotoko's rejection.
Junko and Satomi tries to convince Kotoko to give up Naoki but
she tries to find excuses for Naoki's behaviour towards her.
Reiko asks Naoki as to why he didn't accept Kotoko's letter. He
replies with an indignant answer that he wasn't interested in
Kotoko. Just then Kotoko spots Naoki and Reiko walking past her
and feels terrible...
Kotoko walks home feeling terrible after her rejection by Naoki.
She spots many people running in the direction of her house.
Actually, her house has caught fire and firemen are trying to put
out the fire. Kotoko looks on with a shocked expression. Kotoko's
dad thinks that she is inside and tries to get in to save Kotoko.
When he finds that Kotoko is alright, he hugs her and the two cry
for the loss of their house.
Having no where to go, Kotoko and her dad stays in her dad's
restaurant. Out of a sudden, Machiko, her dad's ex-classmate and
good friend comes and is happy to know that he is alright.
Kotoko comes to school the next day and finds her friend Kin-chan
asking for donations on her behalf. She feels embarrassed and
hangs her head in shame. When Naoki walks past, Kin-chan
questions him why he had to make Kotoko unhappy. Naoki walks past
while Reiko offers to donate to Kotoko. Kotoko rejects her
gesture while Reiko further insults Kotoko by saying that she
should be happy not to donate to Kotoko since this will spare her
from the bad luck that Kotoko is having.
Kotoko and her dad, Shige comes to Machiko's place to stay. When
Machiko's elder son comes home, Kotoko is shocked to find that he
is Naoki! The thought of living with Naoki under the same roof
makes Kotoko extremely happy.
Kotoko occupies Yuki's (Naoki's younger brother) room and this
results in Yuki's dislike for Kotoko. Naoki sees Kotoko laughing
to herself and tells Kotoko that he dislikes her very much.
Kotoko goes to school with Naoki the next day and he makes a lot
of rules for Kotoko. He makes Kotoko stay at least 2m away from
him and tells Kotoko that she is stupid. However, this does not
stop Kotoko from getting close to Naoki.
At the train station, Kotoko is harrassed by some gangsters but
Naoki walks off without helping her. Kotoko then kicks the
gangsters and flees while Kin-chan tries to fight off the
gangsters alone.
Kotoko asks Naoki why he didn't save her but he rebukes her by
saying there was no need to save her. Infuriated by Naoki's
remark, Kotoko boasts that she will be in the top 100 in the
coming test even though Kotoko is from the worst class in the
cohort -- F class.
Kotoko regrets boasting to Naoki that she will get into the top
100. She then finds out from Machiko that Naoki is such a genius
that he never studies. When Machiko offers to get Naoki to help
Kotoko, she declines.
The next day, Kotoko finds out that Machiko had forced Naoki to
put on girls' clothes when he was very young. Thus, she gets one
of those photos and threatens Naoki with it. In return, Naoki
must tutor her for the week.
Naoki is exasperated by Kotoko when she has got only 2 questions
correct after many hours. He then gives her a stack of books to
do.
Kotoko becomes very hardworking to the amazement of those around
her. However, Naoki is extremely exhausted after many days of
tutoring Kotoko. Machiko shoots a picture of Kotoko and Naoki
when they both fall asleep. She then gives it to Kotoko as a
lucky charm.
When the results are out, Naoki as usual gets the top spot while
Kotoko gets the 100th place. However, as she is from the 'F'
class, her name is omitted from the board. Kotoko is extremely
disheartened and drops the photo Machiko gave her.
The photo that Kotoko lost is put on the school's notice board
and rumours start flying around that Kotoko and Naoki are an
item. Kotoko is questioned by her friends while Reiko keeps
asking Naoki what has happened ...
