There are so many hotels in Venice in all it's narrow, winding streets, that it takes a little bit of thought and research to choose the right hotel in Venice.  We recommend staying in San Marco or Castello so that you can see all the major sites early in the day, but if you're more interested in experiencing Venice the way locals do, you might want to stay in Santa Croce or Dorsoduro.

Consider your hotel's proximity to the grand canal - hotels away from the canal are likely to be cheaper, but you'll want to have exact directions so that you're not wandering around the city with all your baggage and a tourist map.

Wherever you stay, make sure you have exact directions from the airport to your hotel before you arrive.

Here are our favorite hotels in Venice

Hotel Danieli - Riva delgi Schiavoni, Castelo 3196.  Tel. 041 5226480
If you want to feel like a doge in elegant and romantic traditional Venitian surroundings, this is the place.  Rooms are expensive but beautiful and the location, along the grand canal, cannot be beat.  Ask for a room in the elegant old wing.

Hotel Londra Palace - Riva degli Schiavoni, Castelo 4171 Tel 041 5200533
If you're looking for a nice hotel, close to the grand canal that isn't excessively expensive, the Hotel Londra Palace is a good bet.  Rooms are elegantly furnished and clean, staff is friendly, and the hotel is small enough for people to remember your name as you come and go.  The location, right on the grand canal and close to San Marco cannot be beat.

San Moise - Piscina San Moise, San Marco 2058.  Tel 041 520 3755
This clean, quiet and centrally located hotel is a good choice for someone on  a budget.  Rooms are furnished in traditional Venitian style.
