The Italian Mafia!
The mafia started in Sicily and Calabria during the medieval times to protect estates when landlords were not present.  By the 1800's the Mafia had become criminal and used violence to gain respect and instill fear.  The members were sworn by a strict ethical code called omerta.  If one member broke the group of rules the cost was one's life. The mafia soon became so strong that they became politicians and officials and were able to influence police forces and gain access to weapons.  The Italian government under Benito Mussolini tried to control the mafia with minimal success.  The mafia surfaced with great strength again after World War II.  Because Mussolini was so strict in his codes and enforcement, many members of the italian Mafia moved to the United states and Canada.  Italian organized crime led criminal charges especially during prohibition.  By the mid-to-late 1930's the Mob moved in to drugs, money laundering and many other criminal activities..
