The second floor beckons...
On one wall to the right, are two rooms: one occupied by Jennifer, and locked.  The other seems occupied, but there are no current projects about, the bed is not rumpled from recent use, or even old use.  The large bathroom on this floor is used by visitors and residents alike, for it has a large bathtub and all the proper Victorian amenities -- including electrically heated water. Beyond the bathroom on the left side is a hallway and the third grad student's room, usually darkened and unused.  The library tower is situated here, and is a thing of great beauty, described elsewhere.
Up the stairs to the third floor, the mood visibly changes.  This is the Master's Domain.  Don't go in there.
There is a nursery to the left of the stairs, brightly lit and often with one of the Sanger brood and their little "friends" either playing, studying, or sleeping.  The office on the third floor is Istvan's design lab, and has dozens of blueprints for new devices scattered about.  There are also some curiosities in this room... Don't look at them too closely.
There is also a stairwell to the attic.  The attic itself is crowded with crates and more boxes, mostly from the prior inhabitants of the house, rather than the Sangers.
There are no mice in the attic.  None.
I wonder why that is?
The corner of Pickering and Clawson in southern Kingsport is where the Sanger residence sits, crouching like a beast ready to pounce.  The trees are tall and mostly unkept on the outside of the property, and there is a low, electrically "enhanced" fence running through the trees and bushes all the way around the property.  The gate to the property is monitored by a complex and improbable electrical system, made by Istvan.  It senses anything larger than a dog and immediately scans the presence.  If it is human, someone inside the house or lab is alerted.  If it is not... well, let's say the results aren't nice.  Upon inspection, if someone wants to come inside, the gate is opened from a distance and closes automatically -- quite like the gated communities of the future.  The drive to the house is well-packed dirt, and there is a carriage house to the side of the main house.  The house itself rises three stories, and has a beautiful tower on the left of the entrance.
The castle which Istvan had moved from Europe sits in the field beyond, about 300 yards away. Between it and the house, the barn Lab rests.  By the way, the reason this is called Scream Ave is because a student or two has cleverly X-ed out the Clawson part of the signpost, and below it scrawled "Scream Ave".  The name has stuck, and with good reason.  Istvan often looks at this sign and gives a pleased chuckle.  The electric fence is strong enough to deliver a fatal shock to anything smaller than a large dog, otherwise it will give a nasty, but temporary jolt.
The Sanger Lab is a converted barn, about 100 feet long and a third of that wide.  Inside it are two floors worth of equipment and experiments strewn about with the care of a true mad scientist.  Along the walls are bottled objects (some in clear water and others in what appear to be blood, formaldahyde, resin and many other stranger substances) that have a smudged label below each one.  In the middle of the floor is a large slab, with pullies and chains connecting it to the upper loft, and huge sets of wires and dangerous looking implements of destruction (or creation?) bound to the head of it and leading into the back of the large room.  Beyond it, the sounds of electricity and two large generators can be heard, they are cordoned off by two thick asbestos black curtains, which also appear at the very entrance of the barn but are most often tied off.
There is a stock room on the left side of the barn, with fire fighting equipment in it, extra clothing (for the burnt ones) and all the beakers, tubes, wires and such that any student or scientist could desire.  To the right, there is a narrow stair which leads to the loft.  On the loft there is a smaller generator and a winch for the slab below, and many boxes and crates which are labeled in stencilled lettering: AFRICA TRIPS and DO NOT OPEN.  Above the loft there is a narrow catwalk which runs the entire distance around the room, about 12 feet above the loft and crossing it in places.
The barn doors can be locked from both the outside and the inside.  When the doors are locked from within, instructions are clear: DO NOT ENTER.  There is a tall silo on the side of the barn, accessable from the rear left of the barn and at the loft's end as well.  This silo is kept locked at all times, but there are rumors that bizarre or alien experiments are hidden within.
