Back To The Islands Boat Tour

Saturday August 18 proved to be a memorable day for 30 adventurers who spent a day on Placentia Bay revisiting former communities on Long Island. The day was organized as both a fund-raiser, a time of community building, and fellowship by the Isthmus Ministry Project.

Mr. Roy Wareham of Arnold's Cove and Mr. Dave Slade of North Harbour are the only licenced charter boat operators in this area of the Bay. They very generously donated their time and the their boats to the project that raised funds for the Church Maintenance Fund of St. Michael's Church in Arnold's Cove and the North Harbour Church Building Fund.

The Boats left North Harbour and Arnold's Cove and met in Haystack which provided some of the more touching moments of the day. On board was 89 year old Frank Drake who was the last person to leave Long Island in 1967. It was very moving to see Frank re-connect to his home and a former way of life that was cherished and missed. A short remembrance service was held at the cemetery that was led by guides; retired clergyman, Mr. Lloyd Collett and Reverend Alf Wareham. The tour then made its way on the calmest day of the summer to Harbour Buffett, Port Royal, Kingwell and finally to Spencers Cove where similar worship took place before returning to their respective ports. There was much prayer, food, laughter, and fellowship.

Reverend Bill Strong, Rector of The Parish of Arnold's Cove, reports that the day was an important day for him because it was important for people to connect to their past. It was also moving to see that a former way of life had been reduced to mere foundations. The pain of resettlement was visible as well as all the fond memories of the past. Thanks to Dave, Roy Lloyd, Alf and all who came for making this event such a success. We are already thinking about how to build on this success.

When The M.V. Lori Rose was coming into Arnold's Cove, Rowena Wareham called over to Frank Drake and said "Well Frank We're home again" Frank smiled and replied " I guess you could call it that." It was an important day.
