St. Mary the Virgin Church, Hodge's Cove |
The Church of St. Mary the Virgin in Hodge's Cove is the third Anglican Church of the community. Details of the first
St. Mary's, including when it was built, has been lost in the mist of time.
It is said to have been about twenty feet long with two rows of seats and a small vestry. Originally, it was a combined
school/chapel. However, it was taken down in 1903 and replaced by a large and very impressive builing which opened in 1906.
Except for the tons of slate for the roof, which came from the slate quarry on Random Island, most of the building material was of
local origin. With the exception of the master builder, all work was done free labor. The Gothic style of the interior was a work
of art. By the late 1950s, this building was in need of extensive repairs. Because of its age, it was decided to build
a new Church.
Work began on the present Church in a new location in 1962. This building opened on November 28, 1965. A Church Hall was added to the rear of the
building in the mid 1990s. The present Church contains a number of items from the previous Church including the altar,
Bible, font, candlesticks, cross, chalice and paten, while the old organ is downstairs in the Hall. A number of other items have been donated to St. Mary the Virgin in memory of loved ones.
In honor of our Church's Patron Saint, a stained glass
window of the Holy Family has been added
above the altar.
The present Church serves more than sixty families. In 2007, there were two burials, four baptisms, and nine candidates confirmed.
