The great fish moved silently through the night water, propelled by the short
sweeps of its tail. The mouth was opened just enough to permit a rush of water
over the gills. There were little other motions; and an occasional correction of
the course by the slight raising or lowering of a fin. The eyes were blind in the dark
and the other senses transmitted nothing extraordinary to the small, primitive brain.
The fish might have been asleep, saved by the movement learnt millions of years in
the water.
The land seemed almost as dark as the water and a man and a woman stepped out
on the wooden porch. They stood for a moment, staring at the sea. The man was
drunk and he stumbled on the bottom step. The woman laughed and took his hand
and together they went to the beach.
IF
by Rudyard Kipling
If you can keep your head when all about you
Are losing theirs and blaming it on you;
If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you,
But make allowance for their doubting too:
If you can wait and not be tired by waiting,
Or, being lied about, don't deal in lies,
Or being hated don't give way to hating,
And yet don't look too good, nor talk too wise;
If you can dream---and not make dreams your master;
If you can think---and not make thoughts your aim,
If you can meet with Triumph and Disaster
And treat those two impostors just the same:.
If you can bear to hear the truth you've spoken
Twisted by knaves to make a trap for fools,
Or watch the things you gave your life to, broken,
And stoop and build'em up with worn-out tools;
If you can make one heap of all your winnings
And risk it on one turn of pitch-and-toss,
And lose, and start again at your beginnings,
And never breathe a word about your loss:
If you can force your heart and nerve and sinew
To serve your turn long after they are gone,
And so hold on when there is nothing in you
Except the Will which says to them: "Hold on!"
If you can talk with crowds and keep your virtue,
Or walk with Kings---nor lose the common touch,
If neither foes nor loving friends can hurt you,
If all men count with you, but none too much:
If you can fill the unforgiving minute
With sixty seconds' worth of distance run,
Yours is the Earth and everything that's in it,
And---which is more---you'll be a Man, my son!

Sir Arthur Conan Doyle used to tell of a conversation he once had with a young
actor who had a small part in one of his plays. The actor laughingly suggested
that they should agree to divide their incomes for the rest of their lives.
Naturally Sir Arthur refused such an absurd idea, since the actor was only
getting 3 pounds a week.
The young actor’s name was Charlie Chaplin.
It was raining very hard, but when I went to get an umbrella, I found that out of the
five umbrellas we have at home, there was not one I could use. I decided to take all
five umbrellas to an umbrella-maker.
So I took them, left them at the umbrella-maker’s, saying that I would call for
the umbrellas on my way home in the evening. When I went to dine in the afternoon,
it was still raining very hard. I went to a nearby restaurant, sat down at a table and
had been there only a few minutes when a young woman came in and sat down at the
same table with me. I was the first to finish and when I got up, I absent-mindedly
took her umbrella and started for the door. She called out to me and reminded me
that I had taken her umbrella. I returned it to her with many apologies.
In the evening I called for my umbrellas, bought a newspaper and got on a tram.
The young woman was in the tram too. She looked at me and said, “You’ve
had a successful day, haven’t you?”
A man walked into a pub with a huge, yellow dog attached to a cord and sat down
at a table. Another man, leading a ferocious-looking bulldog, asked him
disdainfully: “What are you doing with that mongrel?”
The first man answered quietly: “I bet you five hundred dollars that my ‘mongrel’
can kill your bulldog.”
The bet was accepted with a scornful laugh and the yellow dog made mincemeat
of the bulldog in about two minutes.
The barman asked in an awed tone: “Where did that yellow dog come from?”
Its owner replied: “A friend sent him to me from Africa. He had a big mane and
a long tail which I didn’t like and so I had them cut off.”
Doctor: “Your stomach is a little bit out of order. You’ll have to diet.”
Patient: “Yes, doctor. What color?”
A cynic was standing in front of an exhibition of local art talent labeled “Art objects”.
“Well”, he declared to the attendant in charge, “it’s only natural Art should object
and I can’t say that I blame her.”
