This poses a serious conflict of interest for Umno Youth who want to preserve what I believe is a constitutional relic of the past, "Malay special rights" and to be ardent defenders of the Islamic faith. It is clearly illogical to practise a supremacist , racist policy and at the same time claim to adhere fervently to Islam.

Just because "Malay special rights" is constitutional does not give it moral legitimacy. Surely, Umno Youth will accept that a Malay Malaysian millionaire's 'special right' to receive a 7-10 percent discount for a purchase of a house is morally abhorrent. If this is so, why aren't there calls to 'means test' the eligibilty for a discount? This should apply to all other privileges.

Unlike the 10 commandments, the Malaysian constitution is not written o­n a tablet of stone. Indeed the founding fathers of our constitution would be hard pressed to recognise much of our constitution as it has been amended o­n numerous occasions.

The "Malay special rights" as entrenched in the constitution needs to be seriously debated by society as to whether it will actually lead to the advancement of a particular race. It is my contention that "Malay special rights" has been abused in its implementation and has created division within the Malay community and caused unnecessary racial tension.
