SWAT HISTORY

SWAT is historically an important area.Swat has been inhabited for more then 2000 years.Infact it was the cradle of Buddhism.Its serene natural beauty, abundance of water,forest.Alexender came here in 327 B.B.,Gandara civilization reached its zenith here;Mahmood Ghaznavi invasion of swat put an end to Hindushahi rule in early 11 th century A.D.;Pakhtuns of different tribe gradually occupied the region a thousend years ago who were subsequently driven out by Yusufzi Pukhtuns in 1515 A.D.who live here since.They finally laid a skeletal structure of a state of their own in 1915 in swat which was subsequently oranized from 1917 onword. In 1969 Swat along with the states of Dir and Chitral merged into Pakistan and is now a distric of Malakand Division OF the NWFP of Paksitan.The area of Malakand division is 29,872 sq Km and its Population is 4.21 million.Swat lies between 34⁰ - 13'-55'' and 35⁰ - 53' -40'' north latitudes and 70 ⁰ 47'-15'' east longitude in Malakand Division of NWFP of Paksitan The area of Swat is about 3798 sq.km with a populaton of 1.249 million.

SAIDU SHARIF

Headquarters of Swat Valley,Saidu Sharif surrounded by mountains, away 266 Km from Islamabad and 177 kms from Peshwer by road.Saidu Sharif is also linked by air to Peshwer and Islamabad with daily flights depending upon weather.Houses of the Swat Museum which contains one of the finest collections of Gandara art in the world.
MINGORA

Mingora, the main commercial and big city of Swat,3 kms, from Saidu Sharif,has yielded magnificent pieces of Buddhist sculpture and the ruins of great stupas.
MALAM JABA

Malam jaba is 314 kms from Islamabad and 51 kms from Saidu Sharif airport on Saidu-Kalam road.The road diverts right from Manglor to Malam jaba.The elevation of Manglor is 3250 feet about sea lavel while Malam jaba is 8700 feet above sea lavel and the top point of chairlift is 9200 feet above sea lavel.
KALAM

Kalam is another spot of the Swat vally.It is 105 kms from Saidu Sharif.A day's excursion to the charming USHU GABRAL valleys and MAHODAND (lake) can be conveniently arranged. Visit to Mahodand lake is a life time experience.
