| Weather Reports for Israel. www.weather-it-is.com Efrat Weather Statistics More Weather Statistics Weather forecasts located at the link above. The page is still under development, but we're making good progress and should be up soon, God willing. Discussion: Our warm and pleasant weather should give way to an approaching low pressure area. This low pressure area will bring unseasonably cool air in on northwesterly winds. A few spinkles of light rain might even n occur on Wednesday morning. No return to really warm weather is in sight. Barry Lynn Weather Models: The two day forecast is based on predictions from the Weather Research Forecast Model being run here at high grid-resolution (10 km), exclusively, for this page. The model uses data from the GFS, courtesy of NCEP. The longer range forecasts also use the GFS forecast model results, but at 30 km grid resolution. Disclaimer: These forecasts are a done as a service for the local community. They are updated whenever possible (but not always when necessary). These forecasts are predictions about the future state of the weather, not truth, and should be used accordingly. Note: Tekoa tends to be warmer and have less precipitation than Efrat. (I've gone back to Chapter 29, as they gived detailed halacha about personal conduct "becoming" Shabbat. 13a. A person should not pursue his everyday affairs on Shabbath. b. A considerable number of laws stem from this general prohibition, as will try to explain during the next several days. 65. d. 1) Thus, if thinking about one's business will result in a feeling of anxiety or in a sensation of uneasines, it is forbidden. 2) Worry is inconsistent with the rest for which we pray in the Shabbath afternoon service, "a rest of peace, of calm, of tranquillity and of securty, a perfect rest such as You desire." 3) In the Grace after Meals, we also pray "that there should be no trouble, grief or sighing on the day of our rest." | A Torah Perspective on Language in Forecasting I think speaking about the "risk of rain" is fine from a Torah perspective. We have the general rule in the Torah that "the Torah speaks in the language of man(Berachos 31b and many sources)" because it wants to relate to man's world and perspective. The essence of being a communicator is knowing someone's interests and being able to relate and communicate to him there. Torah chooses a subjective language of man when it speaks in the "doubling emphatic." When someone is checking the weather forecast he is not investigating whether or not he should plant his alfala this week or not. He is interested in whether or not he has to take his umbrella or raincoat. Thus the language of "risk" of rain is relating to his reality properly. The Talmud Taanis 8b speaks similarly from the urban dweller's perspective when it describes "gishmei klala" that disturbs people preparing for shabbas. Berachos to you and your family(employing the language of God and man), Rabbi Beryl Gershenfeld (Rosh Yeshiva, Mochon Shlomo Har Nof, Jerusalem) |

| From May 9th, 2004: Sharav Heat Waves are low pressure systems that develop in springtime along the southern Mediterannean. Low pressure systems are areas of (yes) lower pressure where the winds blow counterclockwise around them. This means as they move in from our west that the winds here will blow from the south. If the storms are unusually strong (like today's storm), they can bring very hot air from the Sahara desert east and north into our sliver of the world. Since the winds from this storm are blowing from the desert, these are dry storms. Hence they don't bring rain, but only some very high cloudiness. After this storm passes, the winds will shift more to the west and ocean, bringing more moisture and cooler temperatures. Sometimes high pressure comes in from the west after these storms. With high pressure, the winds blow clockwise. If the high is too our south (like today before the storm), then we have southwesterly (warm) winds. Otherwise, we get more northerly winds, which can bring cold, dry air in winter. But, winter is definetely not on tap for today! Instead, the high building in from the west will bring cooler, more seasonable temperatures. See it all happen: Go to the Aviation surface and 850 mb map. Note how how the surface low proceeds the trough at 850 mb, and the high pressure follows. |
