| You will meet with your supervisor once per week, for one to two hours per week. This should be outside fo the office, away from distractions. I recommend having it at the same time every week. When it is scheduled in, you are likely not to miss this time. It is very easy to overlook it if the time changes every week.In supervision, you should discuss previous programs and analyze successes and failures, look ahead to upcoming programs, potential co-sponsorship opportunities, contacts, etc. The supervision can happen in what ever way is comfortable for you and your supervisor. Also, you can talk about life in general with Taal. She is a ton of fun, and very easy to talk to. Incorporating life outside of work into your discussions is a great idea. This year, there were often times when Taal and I didn't have our supervision sessions. When I did have my supervision sessions, they were very helpful and useful, but they just did not happen regularly enough. Often times when supervision was missed, I felt like there just was not time for my concerns and ideas to be heard. When there was no formal supervision, I resorted to lenthy e-mails to express what I felt was the bare minimum of what I needed to get across for the week. While e-mailing is a great tool, there is nothing to replace the one-on-one face time with your supervisor. You have to be ademant about having supervisions. Stand up in a professional way and be your own advocate. This year Taal was trying to flesh out her own position, let alone supervise me, but hopefully things will change in this respect for next year. Staff meetings, which also were sporaticly held, also provided a time for all staff members to share their ideas and do share in a little Jewish learning time with the rabbinical interns. |
