UF HILLEL STAFF
2003-2004
Keith Dvorchik
Executive Director
Keith is the man behind the scenes at UF Hillel. He has worked here for 5 years and is responsible for the finiacial aspects of Hillel. He's often down in South Florida fundraising and forming vital relationships with donors, but he's always a phone call or instant message away. He also is quite good at rewiring computer devices and telephones in hospital rooms. His wife, Allison, and sons Evan and Matthew often come to visit Hillel, especially on Friday nights for Shabbat dinner. Keith loves to golf, play Madden football on PS2, and spend time with his family.
Taal Hasak-Lowy
Director of Jewish Student Life
Taal hails originally from Chicago (although everyone thinks that because she speaks Hebrew fluently she must be from Israel) and most recently lived in Berkeley, CA before she and her husband moved to Gainesville. Taal has been an instrumental leader in developing new programs on campus this year. By far and away, her most innivative progam was the creation of "Straight From Bubbie's Kitchen", an intergenerational, hands-on cooking and story telling program with student's grandparents from South Florida. Taal helps to connect students with the appropriate resources and always is willing to find students an internship at Hillel. She is the vision behind many of the on-going programs that happen. She's a ton of fun, both in and outside of the office setting. Her daughters, Ariel and Noam are absolutely adorable and we always have fun when they come to play at Hillel.  Taal's husband, Todd, is a professor in the Center for Jewish Studies.

Ted Goldstein
Israel Program Director
Ted's position is focused on helping students with Israel-related prorgamming. Ted is a UF alumni and enjoys still working in Gainesville. He primarily works with Gators for Israel, an AIPAC group of students, and with students who organize Gators for Israel Bonds through the university. Ted also has helped students get to Israel, both on the Birthright Israel Program, as well as on return trip programs.  He helped students first semester plan an Israel Awareness Week as well as two Kumzits progams at Camp Shalom in Ocala. Ted is also the "unofficial IT department" and helps computer illiterate staff with various tecnological projects. In his spare time he likes to bid on random things on Ebay, and watch anything involving Brittany Spears. Next year, Ted will be following his life-long entrapunerial dreams to open his own company. Candice Vogel
Operations Manager
Candice is the operations maganer and makes sure that accounts are paid, the office is running, and that the student desk workers are being productive. She is also a UF graduate. She enjoys eating cubes of low carb cheese, chocolate, and churassco (but only at Los Rancheros in Miami). She entertains the student desk workers by speaking to them in spanish and having them run to purchase more chocolate for her. She enjoys spending time with Chelsea, her five year old daughter, and her mother, as well as vacationing in Nicaragua.
Freda Surki
Israeli Fellow
Freda was born in Turkey, but made alyiah with her family to Holon, Israel (just outside of Tel Aviv) when she was two years old.  Last year Freda lived in St. Johns, Newfoundland, Canada where she froze all winter, which is part of why she decided to come to sunny and warm Gainesville, Florida to be the first Israeli fellow at UF Hillel. Freda's main job responsibility is recruitment and retainment of Birthright Israel students and promotion of Israel-related programs. There have been amazing Israel programs on campus this year including: Cafe B'evrit, Faces and Facets of Israel, Death By Israeli Chocolate night, and Israeli sandwich night. While she will be heading back to Israel to work for the Jewish Agency this summer, inevitably she'll have to spell her last name out for someone before she leaves....S (like South Florida)-U-R-K-I.
Ray Hopper
Executive Chef
It's "Zayde" Ray, our fabulous chef. Chef Ray Hopper joined the Hillel staff and has been serving delicious food ever since. Ray said that cooking is something that comes easily to him. He started learning how to cook in high school from the chefs at his father's restaurant. Born in New York City in the 1950's, Hopper spent his youth involved in things that Hillel students can only read about now. From 1995 to 2001, Ray had owned a restaurant in downtown Gainesville called "Pura Vida." Ray has learned how to cook traditional Jewish dishes for Shabbat."I like eating the matzoh balls before they are even in the soup," said Ray, who had never made a matzoh ball before working at Hillel.
Aaron Alexander comes from the University of Judaism in LA for two weekends a month to inspire students from his almamatter. Aaron likes to snack on Hillel nosh, but also go to non-kosher restaurants to let the grass under the kippah grow. Darren Kleinberg enjoys coming to share his love of Judaism from Kochovay Torah Yeshiva in New York. He enjoys spending his time outside of work with his wife, Deborah, and their baby daughter, Layla.
(Darren not pictured because all of the times he was here it was Shabbat)
