| Fire Swept through the fourth floor of the Textile Warehouse Building on Tuesday afternoon, March 3, 1964. State Fire Marshall stated the fire was caused by faulty 220-volt wiring in the textile area. Inmate fireman were first on the scene. The Fort Madison Fire Department, Denmark, Donnellson, Keokuk, Burlington, Weaver and West Point all responded to help fight the blazing fire. The seriously damaged area was confined mainly to the top floor and the roof of the building. n the lower floors the Protestant Chapel, Prison Auditorium and Inmate Tailor Shop Cutting room suffered smoke and water damage. Also, the Dining Hall on the main floor was damaged by water but was usable shortly after the fire was doused. It was written that the clean-up was one of the fastest on record. The inmates worked around the clock or 24 hours to clean away the debris. |
