| Which Vice-Presidents did not run for an additional term with their President? 1. George Clinton (1809-1813), under James Madison, who won. However, Clinton was also VP during Thomas Jefferson's second term (1805-1809), the first election for which the electors voted separately for President and Vice-President. 2. John Caldwell Calhoun (1825-1829), under John Quincy Adams. Note that, while Adams chose a different running mate, the party had split, and Calhoun was running mate for Andrew Jackson, who won the election. Calhoun was not Jackson's running mate for the second term. 3. Hannibal Hamlin (1861-1865), under Lincoln, who won. 4. Schuyler Colfax (1869-1873), under Grant, who won. 5. Thomas Andrew Hendricks (1885-1889), under Cleveland, who lost. (Cleveland won his second term in 1892, with a different running mate). 6. Levi Parsons Morton (1889-1893), under B. Harrison, who lost. 7. Garret Augustus Hobart (1897-1901), under McKinley, who won. 8. James Schoolcraft Sherman (1909-1913), under Taft, who lost. Part of this was due to the splitting of the Republican party by Theodore Roosevelt, Jr. (running with Hiram Johnson). 9. John Nance Garner (1933-1941), under Franklin Delano Roosevelt, who won. Garner actually served two terms as Vice-President under Roosevelt. 10. Henry Agard Wallace (1941-1945), under Franklin Delano Roosevelt, who won. 11. Nelson Aldrich Rockefeller (1974-1976), under Gerald Rudolph Ford, who lost. |
