Which grandson of a Vice-President:
. . . ran for President & lost twice?
. . . to whom?
. . . and failed to get his party's nomination a third time?
(Hint: He also served as ambassador to the United Nations.)

Adlai Elwing Stevenson II
lost the presidential election to Dwight David Eisenhower in 1952 and 1956.
He sought the nomination a third time, in 1960, but lost to John Fitzgerald Kennedy, who appointed him Ambassador to the United Nations.  Stevenson held that post through the October, 1962 Cuban Missle Crisis, and until his death in 1965.  (P.S.  He was also elected governor of Illinois in 1948 by a wide margin.)

Adlai Elwing Stevenson I was Vice-President under President Cleveland from 1893-1897.  He also ran for VP as running mate to William Jennings Bryan in 1900.
