| The Arizona Republic January 30, 2002 GOP was also asleep Robert Schieve complains that the Democrats trying to tie President Bush to Enron were absent when the question was President Clinton's receipt of Chinese money ("Enron vs. China," Letter, Monday). His complaint is true, as far as it goes, yet utterly inaccurate. Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., urged Congress to address the issue of donations to Clinton by the Chinese, but was rebuffed; the Republican leadership of the time (House Speaker Newt Gingrich, et al.) barely gave it lip service. The question of the Democrats' position at the time was irrelevant, since the Republicans refused to take any action at all. If you have any trouble understanding where the Democrats were, Mr. Schieve, you should first ask where the Republicans were. |
