GENERAL
INFO |
BUSUANGA,
the largest island in the Calamian Group of
Islands is composed of 39 islands and islets. It
serves as the link between the mainland of
Palawan and the rest of the country. Busuanga
lies westerly midway between north and south,
comprising a large group of islands, bounded by
the north about 75 km off by Mindoro, on the
west by the South China Sea, on the south by
Culion Island, and on the east by the Sulu Sea.
Busuanga has a rough mountain and hilly terrain,
particularly on the west. Most of its islands
and islets have silica which account for the
white beaches.

| Also
located in the island of Busuanga is the town of
CORON with a population of about 30,000.
The municipality has an area of some 95,000
hectares and is composed of 50 big and small
islands. The topography is characterized by
rugged terrain and rolling hills, with mountain
ranges running in almost all directions and
extended along the seashore.

CALAUIT
ISLAND in Northwestern coast of Palawan was
declared a game preserve and wildlife sanctuary
in 1977 as the Philippines responded to an
appeal by the International Union of
Conservation of Nature (IUCN) to save endangered
African animals. The island is a 3 hour
boat ride from Divelink Resort and offers a safari
of exotic wildlife. Initially, eight species of
animals were imported from Kenya, Africa,
notably giraffe, impala, topi, gazelles, eland
and zebra.
The forests, grasslands and mangrove swamps are
also the habitat of some of the country’s
rarest and most endangered species. Calauit’s
marine sanctuary provides refuge to sea turtles
(pawikan), giant clams and the rare seacow
(dugong).

INTERVIEW |
|
Taken from an interview with Ms. Cristina Matta
by : GO! MONTHLY GUIDE TO THE PHILIPPINES ISSUE,
JUNE 1999 |
|
QUESTION
: IF you want to show a foreign guest
the best of the Philippines, where would you
take him?
ANSWER : Without a doubt,
NORTHERN PALAWAN. The Calamian Group
of islands showcases what I considered the Philippines'' best
in terms of small islands with white sandy beaches ringed by
coral reefs. Then there is stunning Coron Island with
limestone cliffs, volcanic lakes, mangroves and protected
coves with turquoise waters. There are dramatic seascapes,
birds and their calls, fish among live coral - these are daily
surprises as are occasional sighting of dolphins, blue
spotted stingrays and sea turtles. |
