Due to the lack of knowledge, events and means of promoting the Caribbean culture in the Raleigh NC and surrounding areas, the first Caribbean pageant, Ms. Island Queen was held in 1998. As knowledge of the pageant circulated the area, men also became interested in this event. As a result, the first Annual Mr. and Ms. Island Fire pageant was established in November 2000.
The men, women, boys and girls compete against each other within their respective age categories. The age range for contestants is 10 - 12 yrs (Prince & Princess); 13 - 17 yrs (Jr. Mr. & Miss); 18 - 45 yrs (Mr. & Ms.). Contestants DO NOT have to be a native of the Caribbean; however, they have to have some form of exposure to the Caribbean culture via personal experience, upbringing, knowledge gained from family/friends or research.
Competitive categories are: Introduction (30 seconds max - tell something about yourself); Caribbean Wear (typical attire for the Caribbean island/country you are representing); Talent (5 minutes max; does not have to be a Caribbean talent); Formal Wear (does not have to be a Caribbean formal wear); and Educational Forum (2 minutes max; brief speech based on research you did about the Caribbean island/country you are representing). Winners receive a cash prize, crown, trophy and sash.
The pageant is open to the public and is held annually in Garner, NC. You do not have to be a resident of NC to participate. There is a maximum of 6 contestants per age category. Deadline for registration is June 1st. |
