A  notebook (to be brought to every class)

Grading:
15%
Mid-term   exam
Reminder: It is the policy of JNUE that no more than 30% of the students are to receive an A, no more than 40% to receive a B, and no more than 30% to receive a C.  Obviously the grading then is competitive with other Sophomore students. Of course Ds and Fs are not limited.
25%
Final   exam
Journal, quizzes and assignments
40%
Attendance   and participation 20%
Attendance Policy:
According to CNUE policy, after 4 absences you fail the course. You may be absent one day without penalty, but after that, each absence will reduce your grade by ten percent (A to B, etc.). Please, don't repeat being late for class or you will be considered absent for the day. I will excuse absences caused by illness or some other serious reason if you contact me before class or immediately after you return to school. If you miss a quiz you must see me BEFORE the next class or your mark will be zero on that quiz.
Class Participation:
Part of your participation grade includes bringing your own copy of Fifty-fifty, book I, 2nd edition.
You may not borrow or share a friend's copy.
Homework:
Homework shall be collected at the beginning of each class only. Do all homework assignments by yourself, unless I tell you otherwise.
Journal Writing: Read this carefully and thoroughly!
I want you to write in a journal during this term to help you get comfortable with the process of putting your thoughts down on paper... in English, of course. It's an opportunity to improve your ability to communicate effectively in English. I'm not looking for perfect prose; this is a journal after all, but I am looking for you to express yourself in English. Use the journal to practice what you've learned, sentence structures, vocabulary, etc., but by all means use it! And VERY IMPORTANT, when you've  finished writing each week, take the time to read your journal out loud to yourself or even to someone else if you feel comfortable with sharing.

Most of your journal writing will involve RTWD which is
read, think and write.  It will be based on children's stories you will be reading this term.  Check out RTWD for more information.
Ideally, I would like you to write a page in your journal every day, but for this class I'm only requiring two pages a week.. (You can certainly do more!) You can apportion those two pages any way you want; you can compose half a page every morning/afternoon for four days a week, you can write a page on Saturday and Sunday since you don't have this class on those days, or you can even write a leisurely two page meditation on Sunday afternoon. Whatever you find best suits your personality and your writing habits. However, please do plan for your journal writing time -- don't be writing your pages immediately before your journals are due. You won't enjoy writing it, and I won?t enjoy reading something you've concocted at the last minute to say nothing of a complete lack of learning from it.
Your journals are due each week at the beginning of class. At times he content of your journal will be entirely up to you though there are certain characteristics of journal writing. Journals can be used to recount events in one's life, but they usually include one's reaction to those events, e.g. what it meant to you or how it affected you. You can even use your journal entries to ask me questions (e.g. What do you mean when you talk about...) or to make comments that you didn't feel comfortable making in class.
I will read every single one of your journals and will sometimes respond. If you write something that doesn't seem to demand a response, as often as not, I won't respond. On the other hand, if you ask me a question, or if I see you working on something, and I think that I can help, I may write more than a page. If you want more feedback than you're getting, just ask for help, and I'll be happy to give it to you.
ENJOY writing in your journals! I don't grade your individual journal entries, but the journal is part of your portfolio and counts as approximately 25% of your final grade (one of the easiest A's you'll ever get.)
Keep This In Mind
Tests and quizzes make up only approximately 50% of your class grade. This means that you can get a good grade on your tests and still fail the class if you don't do your homework and attend every class. On the other hand, if you attend class every day, do all your homework on time, and write in your journal faithfully you will pass the class even if your test grades are poor.
*Students caught cheating on tests and quizzes shall receive a mark of zero/F."
Turn off all cell phones while in class! If there is an absolute necessity for you to receive a call, let me know at the beginning of the class. Please do not send messages during class.
Please feel free to visit my office anytime to get help or just to talk or practice speaking English.
HAVE A PRODUCTIVE SEMESTER!!!
