People usually get their water from a well using an Ox & Palm (Corned Beef) can. It's not as simple as you'd think. It takes the right flick of the wrist for the can to submerge; otherwise, it just lays on the surface.
The atoll has a fresh-water 'lens', and the well is dug just deep enough to reach that lens. Any deeper and salt water would contaminate the fresh. |
