Hostel Recommendations
If you're traveling and have more fun meeting people along the way, stay in a hostel.  Why pay 2-3 times more for a bed and shower each night and have little chance of meeting fellow travelers...
Sante Fe, New Mexico  2/18-19/03
You'll probably meet lots of interesting people here due to the nature of Sante Fe.  My new acquaintences included a young man from Japan, one from Argentina, a veteran of WWII, and a returnee from teaching English in South Korea.  Nice place to stay, good location.  You do a chore each day.
July 2005---stayed here a second time and it was still a pleasant place to be.

Denver, Colorada  2/17/03
Definitely the cheapest, $11.  Even though there's to be no smoking inside, I guess the office doesn't count.  The sheets and towels kept there had a definite smoke odor to them.  Odd little place but ok for a night.  Funny, the only place to insist on keeping a photo id...
Tucson, Arizona  2/20-21/03
A great little house w/big screen TV.  Friendly people running the place...quite a number of people around daily.  You gotta split from 11:00 - 3:00.
Sacremento, California  2/22/03
It truly is a mansion, beautiful woodwork and all.  Very clean.  Higher than most, but look where you are!  Sheets and towels are both extras.  You gotta split here, too, from 10 to 5!
San Luis Obispo, California  2/23/03
Another house, homey atmosphere, great sour dough pancakes in the morning.  Cool town, too.  Split for 7 hours through the day, also.
Eugene, Oregon

I'll STEER CLEAR!
Well, that's just MY experience.  Seemed like nice enough people that run it, but the condition was quite slovenly in the bedroom.  The bedroom w/bunks looked like it had constant boarders with clothes strung all over the room.  Smelled pretty rank, also.  It's a vegetarian only kitchen; you can eat meat, but you can't cook it.  That's cool, but just so you know...
Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada
8/10-15/02

A big place...just a minute walk to the beach and the sea.  I would highly recommend it.  We stayed there a few days and really liked it.
Kanab, Utah
2004

My favorite place this trip.  Just an hour or so north of the Grand Canyon and lots of other canyons.  Friendly people and a super couple running it!
July 2005
A second time here.  New management and Mike does a lot to make it a pleasant place to hang.  I always meet some great people here.
Nampa, Idaho
2004
A nice house a couple of miles off the highway.  Quiet, nice place to stop for a night or stay a while.
Moab, Utah
2004
Only $9 a night for the dorm and there's private rooms and cabins.  Popular place w/lots of people...hikers, climbers, and bicyclers.  Don't waste your time at a motel!
Taos, New Mexico
The Snow Palace Hostel
July 2005
This was a favorite place.  I ended up tenting here but turned out for the best.  Met some great people and we played music for hours each night.  A young man from France, Anselme, accompanied me on to Mesa Verde and then on to Kanab.
