Only 36 km long and 20 km wide, this island home o+ the Komodo dragon is nestled in between Sumbawa and Flores. The giant lizards of Komodo were only a myth until the turn of the century when a few pearl fishermen were forced to land here one night in a storm. A desolate inhospitable island with only one mountain on it, Gunung Arab (Sataliso), which no native will climb believing that it's possessed with evil spirits and their reptile companions, the nagas. The few fishing families on Komodo today are descendants of convicts sent here from Flores as punishment.
