Serious misconceptions about Islam and Muslims exist in the western world, especially in the USA, and have reached epic proportions after September 11, 2001. At the same time, public interest in learning Islam and Muslim culture have surged all time high. Unfortunately, resources on the subject available in libraries around the country are very scarce and whatever materials are available, most of them are filled with hatred written by the medieval European authors of crusade era. Worse yet, taking opportunity of the existing vacuum, some leaders of the extreme Christian right are spewing venom against Islam and the Muslims and vitiating the public mind.
Under the circumstances, the importance of providing correct information to the general public on Islam and Muslim culture cannot be overemphasized. In this respect, the CAIR library project is an excellent attempt; however, it provides only very limited resources. Establishing an Islamic Public Library of books, audio and video tapes, and other materials will offer the best opportunity to the public to know Islam and Muslim culture.
