Why do we Dispute
Hadeeth and Sunnah ?
It would seem rather strange that people who claim to be the followers of Prophet Muhammad (namely, the writers and supporters of this website) would be opposed to any teaching in which Prophet Muhammad's words and actions are learnt and practiced.
However, it is not following and obeying the Prophet Muhammad which we dispute. All Muslims would never argue that following and obeying Prophet Muhammad is a must. What does it mean to follow and obey Prophet Muhammad though ?
Let us consider an extreme example, does Islam tell us to live as if we were in 7th century Arabia , when and where Prophet Muhammad supposedly lived ? Are we required to ride camels and live with the technology of the time ?
No supporter of hadeeth and sunnah would agree to THAT !
What does this mean ? This means that Prophet Muhammad cannot be copied in totality. We cannot become Arabs, go back in time and live the way he did. And what's more, Allah never asks us to do so.
So we know that following and obeying the Prophet Muhammad must be in the context of Islamic teachings and practises. We do not need to obey Prophet Muhammad if he told his wife to cook his favourite dish in his lifetime.
After having established this, we now have to ask 'what are the sources which represent the teachings of Prophet Muhammad'.
THIS is the dispute.
Why can we not accept the hadeeth and sunnah as source of teaching of Prophet Muhammad ?
1) The Muslim's first source of law, the Quran does NOT mention the hadeeth and sunnah as valid sources of law and furthermore, fails to validate hadeeth and sunnah.
(please see our Section 2 for a discussion of Quran vs Hadeeth and Sunnah)
2) Hadeeth and sunnah institute practises which go against Quranic teachings and since Quran is our undisputed first source, the teachings of Hadeeth and sunnah cannot be accepted.
(Please see our Section 3 for a discussion on this topic)
3) Hadeeth and sunnah do not represent a single, consistent source like the Quran. Instead, there are many versions of hadeeth and sunnah which create sects and divisions among the Muslims.
