Sura Al-Fatiha

`

(1) In the name of Allah, the Most Compassionate, the Most Merciful. (2) Praise be to God, Lord of the worlds. (3) The Most Compassionate, the Most Merciful. (4) Owner of the Day of Judgment. (5) It is You we worship, it is from You we seek help.  (6) Guide us on the straight path. (7) The path of those whom you favor,  Not the path of those who earn your anger or who go astray.

Al-Fatiha means "The beginning".  Sura means "a chapter".  Sura Al-Fathia, therefore is the beginning of the Qur'an, or the first chapter.  Al-Fatiha is the most important prayer that a Muslim can say.  Mohammed (pbuh - Peace be upon him), said that no obligatory prayer is valid unless Al-Fatiha is recited.  In fact, Muslims recite Al-Fatiha at least 17 times a day during their 5 daily prayers.
