ON THE SPOTLIGHT

Ms. Catmon to Ms. Thompson...

It's been 10 yrs. since we graduated from UP High. It was the time when I have to decide what I want to do for my future. I had to choose whether to take the nursing course or PT. After listening to the advices of my family I took the nursing course in Cebu State College. Maayo gani kay naa si Charisse and Armiel. It's so nice to have somebody na mga UPian. We graduated March 1996 and took the board exam May 1996. Luckily we passed the exam (taga-UP gud na). I was a Volunteer Nurse from June 1996 to February 1997 in a District Hospital in Sogod, Cebu (a town next to Catmon). So, I was able to spend more time with the people of Catmon ( remember Miss Catmon?) and most especially to my one and only MAMA.

FEBRUARY 1997

I started working at Ford Medical Center. I stayed there for only a year because Ford is a diagnostic clinic and I feel the need to practice my nursing skills in the hospital. I will never forget Ford because I met my MAN there and hangtud karon kami lang gihapon. Pero wala pa mi nagminyo. Take note I'm still single as in dili pa ko double.

FEBRUARY 1998

My orientation in Cebu Doctors' Hospital started. I have realized na dili diay sayon ang mag-nurse. After a year I decided to give up then they offered me a position in the Operating Room. Wow, I love being an OR nurse! I feel that I really belong there. For my future and for greener pasture I took the CGFNS exam para makalarga ko sa States. I took the exam twice pero walay swerte. I even took the exam the 2nd time sa Hongkong kay ingon sila mas dako ang chance na makapasar pero wala gihapon. UPian man unta ko ngano wa man ko kapasar? Why me Lord???

OCTOBER 2000

I guess everything has reasons. Employers from Manitoba came to Cebu so nagpa-interview ko kay basin ako swerte naa sa Canada. Since they like me they are willing to hire me if I will pass the Canadian RN exam. Exam nasad!!! Wa ko choice so I took the exam in Manila Dec. 2000. There were more than a hundred but only 42 passed and I'm proud to be one of them. Yehey I could say na taga-UP gyud ko. The best part of it was we were given an immigrant VISA.

JUNE 2001

June 15 was my last of day of work in CDH. I got my VISA on the 18th and left Pinas on June 25th. It's hard to believe but this is what I have been waiting for. I was happy but at the same time sad because I will be away from my family and my man. Thompson,Manitoba - the Hub of the North is not really a bad place to live. People are friendly pero naay say salbahis na doctor. I have to be strong and fight if I need to. Kon dili ka mosukol daug-daugon lang ka. Sus, pwerte ka tugnaw diri. Nakasuway na gyud ko na -40 C ang temp. Naay snow from Nov. to June. Not bad because we can ski and go ice fishing. It's really fun.

JULY 2002

Last July 2002 I went to San Francisco, New York and L.A. before going home to Cebu. I met Charisse and she's my only contact from UP High. Thank you very much Nanay for calling me. From now on I will be able to keep in touch with our batch. I'm looking forward to see you all. Mabuhay ang ISKOLAR'92!!!
