Predeparture--The night before heading out, we had a meeting/reception at the house of the Consulate-General of Japan in Portland, OR.  It was pretty nice, and his house was incredible.

in the living room. They had 5 or 6 ikebana         I just included these because they were my first sights of Japan.
arrangements donated by masters of the art.
There are three shown here.
My night in HELL!! These pictures were taken from a bar called Heaven & Hell, which we went to in Tokyo one night, after the day's meetings.  We spent the night in the "hell" section, and it was mildly more amusing than the "heaven" part.  Sorry some of these pics are messed up, I had trouble with my camera with this lighting.
left--a group shot in hell. Me, Jenny, Tom, Ian (he's a cool kat from Wales), and a very blurry Chieh.  What you may not believe is Chieh was so drunk, he actually looked like that.

I stoop a lot in Japan.

When I'm not stooping, I like to spend my time whacking my head on things.  Japan is a short country...
In this shot, Tan is one of the only clear folks, but trust me, he's put back a few. :-)
I rather like this picture though, just because we were in "hell" at the time, and it's pretty messed up.
This is one of the most frightening things I've seen in Japan. This is the urinal in "hell's" men's room. Yes, that's a giant mouth you do your business in. What you can't see is the camera that one of his extra right hands is holding. It points down and the flash goes off while you're standing there. Worst of all: the women's room was scarier--remind me to describe it in my journal, if I forget... :-)
