| Based on the book "True Women" by Janice Woods Windle This story follows the lives of two childhood friends Euphemia and Georgia. It focuses on history's 'Runaway Scrape', 'The Trail of Tears' and the Civil War. Georgia Lawshe was raised in Georgia. She is a 1/4 Creek Indian and faced years of hatred including being affected by the Trail of Tears. Euphemia raised differently in Texas was forced to fight the Indians there and was raised to think the Indians were savages and the enemy. Phoeme married a local rancher Willian King. Georgia eventually married Dr. Peter Woods and they moved to Texas and started cotton farming. The friends reunited but had travelled different roads since their childhood. Georgia was proud to be part indian and hated anyone who spoke badly of them. Whereas Phoeme disliked anyone who owned slaves as Georgia did. They eventually overcome their differences and realise their friendship was one of the most precious and enduring things in their lives. By late life Phoeme realised she was wrong to hate the indians and fixed the error of her ways in a most touching gesture... What I found most moving was the portrayl of the horrid things done to the native American Indians during the Trail of Tears. |
