| Kirk |
| The "Kirk." For all of you Star Trek fans it may sound familiar, the Kiligons worst enemy was the Kirk, I am also called Kiligon and Kirk is my worst enemy. Above average intelligence but no genius, overly bratty, and definitely the most arrogant person I have ever met. We both were in the same 4th grade class where at first, I will admit, I had a crush on him. As I got to know him better I regreted it more and more. After the 4th grade he moved and I was left without a disliked opponent to compete against. I did well in Taegu but when I came to Seoul I discovered a true treat, Kirk lived in Seoul. Well, we met on the battlefield again in the National Geographic Geography Bee held at the school to decide who would take the test in hopes of going to Washington. We both did well and I tied in second made one mistake and came in third. He won that year but he didn't make it to Washington. The important thing was my friend Erin and I made it into the top ten and we had a lot of fun running through the halls singing, "We are the champions." Flash to the 8th grade. My new friend Lisa, my old friend Erin, and of course Kirk were competing. My father spent nearly a month telling me to study, "You know Kirk has been studying since Christmas." It got on my nerves but I made a bit of attempt at studying but it was minimal reading the test questions in the daily buletin. One day we had both walked up and were reading the buletin. I told him what my father said. He seemed unimpressed. "My father has been telling me the same thing." I was shocked. On to the competition. Kirk was bragging how he was going to beat everyone and then he turned to me and said, "Wouldn't it be funny if some stupid 7th grader won?" I didn't laugh but went back to talking to my sister and friends. My friends, Kirk, and I made the finals my sister again just missing them. We all were doing well and than Kirk was up. The woman reading the questions smiled and said, "This country is known as the Land of the Rising Sun." Kirk smiled arrogantly and said. "Korea." She frowned and said, "I'm sorry the answer was Japan." Kirk went back to his seat looking like he was going to die. I made a mistake of my own on a question about the desert near my home town. Kirk made mistake after mistake still apperantly in shock over his earlier accident while I thought very carefully about my answers so as not to repeat my earlier mistake of answering to fast. It was time to announce the two people who would face off. They read off my name and I stood up proudly waiting to see who I was to compete against. They announced a 7th grade girl I knew and she, taking a wild guess, did indeed win. I was a little disappointed but I couldn't help but laugh, and laugh, and laugh. I had beaten Kirk for all to see. A few kids teased me about being beaten by a 7th grader, but I felt a bit sorry for him. His parents were furious and had been chewing him out after everything had finished. That didn't last long as I listened to him talk endlessly about how he knew the answer to all the questions I had gotten wrong. Finally, I turned to him saying... "Yes, but you didn't make it to the finals." Several of the kids chuckled and he shut up. I didn't hear him talk about that anymore, even when people asked. I moved in the 9th grade and haven't seen him since, but I don't care anymore. I beat him... and couldn't be happier to do it. |
