| Welcome to my triathlon coaching page. Ten years ago I would have doubted I'd ever do a triathlon much less be a coach, but that's why this page is here. If I could escape the couch monster & get into shape then pretty much anyone can! You probably thinking 'yea right!' I have a job & there is no way I even want to think about crawling to any finish line. Well most triathlon these days are of the sprint variety, which means you could probably finish one in under three hours with a little bit of training. The swims is usually around 800 yards, followed by a bike ride usually 10-18 miles, and a 5K or 3.1 mile run to the finish. I found a flyer for the San Antonio Triathlon on my windshield after I did my first 5k race in '96. A friend I used to rock climb with twisted my arm to enter. While the race was pretty miserable, I think I finished in 36 minutes, my wife at the time beat me by three or four minutes. Standing around after my wife asked for a divorce, things were steadily going downhill fast. I found the flyer back at my truck, noted the distances-1000 meters downstream in the Guadalupe river.. downstream humm that part sounds do able.. 18 miles on the bicycle.. I could probably handle that & the 5k run; it wasn't pretty but I'd just done that. I thought about it for a week, & by then I had a lot more time on my hands to train! 25+ Triathlons later (sprint, international, 1/2 Ironman distances), the rest is pretty much history. I kept training with the intention of returning to climbing and high alititude mountaineering but found a whole new lifestyle. In November of '01, I found myself moving to a new town for a new job. Realizing I no longer had the training opportunities and support of my local triathlon club Team Alamo, I decided I needed to get more serious about the technical side of my training. In February of '02, I completed the coursework for USAT's level 1 coaching certification. In February of '06, I attended USAT's Art and Science of Triathlon conference to renew my coaching certification. |
