The Four Horsemen was a reference of the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse.  They were Pedro Martinez, Greg Maddux, James Baldwin, and Mike Hampton.  In 2000, they were to rule the world.  With offensive weapons like: Kendall, Nomar, Hidalgo, Nevin and Tejada, they appeared to be unstoppable.  In this Mid-season league, they were first in team batting average (.313), hits (711), second in doubles (148), and total bases (1147).  The pitching staff was first in strikeouts (451) and second in WHIP (1.25).  However, the best that The Four Horsemen could achieve was a fourth place finish.

2001 was not as good of a year for the Horsemen.  Although, they added Armando Benitez and Mike Sweeney to their roster as a result of the pre-season draft, they never seemed to get it together.  Hence, the subsequent name-change to The Mules.  Mike Hampton had trouble with his new school district.  James Baldwin got old quick.  Pedro Martinez suffered a season-ending injury in the middle of the season.  Nomar suffered a serious wrist injury at the end of 2000.  He was unable to play anymore than a couple of weeks in 2001.   Greg Maddux and Mike Sweeney were traded away in a deal for Manny Ramirez.  Kendall was also dealt away but the surprisingly capable Paul Lo Duca replaced him.  Jim Thome was picked up as a free agent and paid dividends.  C.C. Sabathia and Roy Oswalt have injected much needed youth.

The Mules struggled all season to maintain a record above .500.  The franchise ended the Regular Season in the middle of the pack, sixth place out of 12 teams.   Their Regular Season record was 184-200-36 (.481 pct.), 50.5 games out of first.  The Mules went nowhere in the Playoffs, losing both games.

The health of Mojomen such as Pedro Martinez and Nomar Garciaparra are keys to success in 2002.
