What is Prophecy? What is Prophesy? Who is a Prophet?

"The Definitions"

       A)
Prophecy: 1) the act of telling what will happen; foretelling future events.
2)
something told about the future; indication of something to come. 3) a divinely inspired utterance, revelation, or writing.

       B)
Prophesy: 1) to tell what will happen. 2) to speak when or as if inspired by God. 3) to interpret or expound the Scriptures. 4) to foretell; predict. 5) to utter in prophecy.

       C)
Prophet: 1) a person who tells what will happen. 2) a person who preaches or teaches what he thinks has been revealed to him. 3) a spokesman, as of some cause or doctrine. One who is divinely inspired to communicate God's will to His people and to disclose the future to them. a declarer, announcer, one who utters a communication. Pours forth the declarations of God. In classical Gk. prophetes signifies "one who speaks for another," especially "one who speaks for a god" and so interprets his will to man. Hence its essential meaning is "an interpreter." A commission to show the people of God 'their transgressions' (Is. 58:1; Mic. 3:8). A duty to admonish and reprove, to denounce prevailing sins, to threaten the people with the terrors of divine judgment, and to call them to repentance. Deliverer of the message of consolation and pardon (Is. 40:1, 2). The watchmen to blow the trumpet warning of the approaching danger (Is. 33:7-9; Jer. 6:17; Is. 62:6). Ambassadors from God, beseeching men to turn from their evil ways and live. Messengers from God giving the declaration of God's will, the denunciation of His judgments, "the defense of truth and righteousness," and to bear the testimony to the superiority of the moral to the ritual. In the days of old the function of the prophet was not merely the disclosure of the future, but included the exposition and application of the law, the declaration of God's will. Teaches "of the existence of an eternal, self-conscious, intelligent, moral, and voluntary Being," who does all things according to the purpose of His will. That all the attributes of this Being are in infinite perfection. The provider of "commentary" upon the doctrine of divine providence, by representing the future even, which it brings to view, as a part of that system of things in which the Creator is present by the direction of His power and the counsels of His wisdom, appointing the issues of futurity.

Prophecy is not intended to open the future to idle curiosity but is for the higher purpose of furnishing light to those whose faith needs confirming. The revelation of future events may be needful in times of discouragement to awaken or sustain hope, to inspire confidence in the midst of general backsliding, and to warn of evil threatening the faithful. The only Prophecy I will teach will be the Prophecies written in God's Holy Bible. That is the only future I am authorized to speak, teach, and reveal. I am not a fortuneteller! I do not know more than what is in the Bible. The only Future I have knowledge of is the Future that is revealed in God's Holy Word. God Bless. Peace!
